TRIP REPORT: Blue Roan Bend Outfitters, Private Lake, Sat, July 16, 2022

A great day at Blue Roan Bend.  Fifteen kayakers and float tubers made it out to the 280 acre lake.  We were met by our host, Newell Atkinson, and he gave us a history of the area and a perspective of the lake.  Quite the Texas history surrounding this property and area – an incredibly nice ranch.

After the briefing, all boats and fisherman were on the water by 8 am.  The lake has plenty of area, and our fifteen kayaks/tubes quickly spread out across the lake.

The weather cooperated nicely.  Very little wind, but goes without saying, quite hot.  The lake contains quite the fishing opportunities.   Deep water, “sand islands”, and lot of shorelines to fish.

Quite the variety of fish were caught.  Bass, gar, catfish, and sunfish.  The favorite flies seemed to be clouser and wooly booger type patterns, but some fish were caught early on topwater.  We even captured photos of deer swimming in the lake – perhaps to cool off.

The heat drove us all off the lake by early afternoon, with the last people leaving around 3.  Newell was a great host, meeting us early and again as we wrapped up the trip.  He is a wealth of knowledge, and his ranch is a top tier operation.  He provided us with this fantastic opportunity, and it was a great time by all.

TFF was invited to fish the Sabine River

A former member of the club, before he moved away, Crawford P. invited us up to fish during the week, so I passed the word out to those folks I thought could go.  He could handle at max 5 people, so I tried to target anglers that had kayaks, and could fish mid-week.

John E. and I had made this trip January 2nd and 3rd, and caught a few fish in the generation canal.  The target species for this groups was supposed to be white bass.

Jan 10th Report: Lake Bastrop – North Shore Park

The Jan 10-11 outing was postponed due to inclimate weather.  LCRA has given us a “credit” to move the reservation to a later date.  I am looking at dates near the end of Feb or mid-March.

Glen Wells and I took a chance and showed up at the Northshore Boat Launch on Fri, Jan 10.  (Glen spent the night on Thurs at the campsite).  We were hoping the “weatherman” got it wrong, at least for the morning.  Not to be.  White caps on the lake at 730am, and just got worse as time went on.  We made a wise choice and drank coffee and left.  The LCRA campsite and tents/cots are nice;  well set up, lots of room, and a nice Bbq and fire pit area.  Also, easy access to the lake from the campsite; able to leave kayaks in the water near the tents.  Will definitely reschedule this outing.

Buescher State Park:  I took the opportunity to stop on the way home at Buescher State Park and bank fished for a couple hours.  I didn’t put my kayak in the lake, and was only able fish one small area near the “boat ramp”.  I managed to pull out a small bass on a clouser.  This lake may be worth a week day trip….small lake but very protected from the wind.  Easy kayak access.
