Event: Fly Rod Building Demonstration

At the TFF “Mini Expo” August 19, 2023

Have you ever considered building your own flyrod?  For anyone with basic dexterity and attention to detail, it’s an achievable and satisfying undertaking.  And at its root, it is not complicated.  We’ll show you just why so many anglers have discovered this and are building creations from the simple yet perfectly crafted to ornate rods deserving the tag “museum quality”!

Have you thought about the reasons to do build fly rods?

There are certainly many, for instance:

  • Cost…   Generally lower than comparable ready made rods
  • Customization of appearance, grip, reel seat, guides, aesthetics, personalization etc.
  • Pride of crafting and using your own creation on the water…coupled with flies you have tied, it’s a great feeling!

In this interactive session, we’ll discuss and demonstrate the following:

  • Materials and components sources
  • Selecting the proper components for your rod
  • Tools & Equipment required
  • Finding the Blank “spine”
  • Preparing and affixing the reel seat and grip
  • Marking out guide positions
  • Preparing the guides: shaping for a professional wrap
  • Affixing the guides and basic thread wrapping techniques
  • Basic Thread trims
  • Description and recommendations for epoxy mixing (Flex Coat), application and curing
  • Decals / coating

We’ll also have reference sheets available for those who want to pursue this addictive hobby further!

Looking forward to a great “Mini Expo”.

Report: Rod Building Class 2023, second session

The 2023 rod building class finished up on Saturday, Feb. 11.  Participants arrived having finished wrapping their rod guides between the two classes. So, the last day was focused on preparing guide wraps and getting one coat of epoxy on the guides. The class participants did some really good work and their rods turned out well.  Following the class today, they will need to put another coat or two of epoxy on their rods and then go fish them.

TFF volunteers were : Eric Richardson, Steve Edwards, Paul Robertson, Joe Nicklo, and Steve Tomlinson.

Rod Building Classes for 2021- CANCELLED

Typically the Texas FlyFishers of Houston offer Rod Building classes in the first part of the new year.  These classes are normally well attended and members walk away with prized possessions – personally built fly rods under the supervision of rod building experts.

Given the current COVID 19 pandemic, the TFF club has elected to cancel these classes for 2021.  We realize these classes are a staple of the club and we will look to “restart” as soon as conditions allow.  We will reevaluate as the year progresses, and consider the potential for classes in the 2nd half 2021.

Pure Joy – Casting a rod you made with a fly you made…

Joe Nicklo and George Sutherland led two rod building classes over the past several months, with much appreciated help from Bobby Orr, Paul Robertson and Joe Flowers as proctors. The first class with nine members was conducted at Bayland Community Center in February. The second class with seven members was conducted at Gordy and Sons in March. Both were two day classes.

The participants not only had fun building a rod to their unique color and preferences, but are now able to enjoy casting with it for years to come. In the fly fishing world, it probably can’t get much better than that – joy of casting a fly you made with a rod you made! No doubt the signup sheet for the next class should be in “overflow” once again!

Did you know that TFF has outstanding Rod Building classes?

Many years, beginning in mid-January, the Texas FlyFishers holds the first of their classes for the year, Beginners Fly Tying. About the same time, the club also offers its two rod building classes, Beginning Rod Building and a few weeks later, Advanced Rod Building. These classes teach the students how to pick out your rod blank and other components, lay out and warp the guides and then, apply a professional looking finish to their rod at, in many cases, a fraction of the price of a upper end production rod.
The first class, Beginners Rod Building Course, is a two-day, all-day course, meeting from 8:00 am to 3:30pm (the instructor does permit a lunch break), usually held on consecutive Saturdays. In the weeks prior to the first class, you will be provided with a list of components necessary to construct your custom rod.
