Reminder New Meeting Location Niko Niko’s for Tuesday March 31, 2026 meeting; Fly Fishing the White River

Date: Tuesday, March 31, 2026

Time: Meeting Time 6 – 9 pm (6-7 pm social hour) with meeting from 7-9 pm.

New Meeting Location: Niko Niko’s located at 1040 W Sam Houston Pkwy N, Houston, TX 77043

Important: This is a new location. We are trying to limit the noise issues we have had at previous locations.

Have you wanted to fly fish a world class trout fishery without having to travel thousands of miles to get there? The White River in the Arkansas Ozarks is widely considered the “Trout Capital of the US” and is a world-class destination for catching trophy-sized trout. The fishery is primarily a tailwater system created by the Bull Shoals Dam, which provides a consistent flow of cold, oxygenated water that allows trout to thrive year-round across more than 90 miles of river. This is a one day drive from Houston and a great fishery

Eric Richardson will discuss getting to the White River, best times to fish, species and stocking of trout, hatches, targeting rising trout, and other information on this amazing fishery. You will also find out why a guide will tell you “God save the Queen” when you miss a hookset on a dry fly.

Date: Tuesday, March 31, 2026

Time: Meeting Time 6 – 9 pm (6-7 pm social hour) with meeting from 7-9 pm.

Date: Tuesday, February 24, 2026

Time: Meeting Time 6 – 9 pm (6-7 pm social hour) with meeting from 7-9 pm.

Meeting Location: The Pit Room BBQ located at 10301-A Katy Fwy, Houston 77024 beside Fishing Tackle Unlimited.

Have you hear ever wondered about building your own fly rod? Are you “build curious”? Are you interested but apprehensive? Have you heard of fly rod building classes but really not understood what’s involved, or what tools, resources and skills you need? If so, come hear our own Steve Tomlinson as he shares practical information on all things build related!

Steve is a retired Manufacturing Professional, having started as a toolmaker, and progressing through machining & metrology, manufacturing engineering, shop / executive management and process consulting roles. He brings a “process mindset” to rod building. He is originally from Bayside, NY where he grew up building & flying RC and CL model airplanes among other interests. After moving to the Capitol District from the Berkshires and Syracuse NY, he acquired the fly fishing affliction. He became addicted to fly fishing the Battenkill, Beaverkill, Esopus, West Branch of the Ausable, and Delaware rivers. He was bitten by the steelhead bug in 2014 and tries to fish Walnut Creek in Erie, PA every year. He has dabbled in saltwater but his first love is freshwater and enjoys kayaking!

In 2014 he was inspired and trained by Kenny Murph (FTU) to build his first fly rod, and has since built over 30 rods. He has documented all aspects of the build PROCESS including resources, steps, spacing guides, etc.

His build philosophy stresses process consistency, form following function and above all, precision in detail.

He is a long standing TFF member, Reel Recovery volunteer, fly tier, and avid woodworker / photographer. He lives in Spring with his wife, has two grown kids in Houston, and a granddaughter (with another on the way!)

Steve will cover rationale for build, tools required, and break down the build PROCESS into seven simple steps. He will also cover resources and simple repairs like replacing a guide / tip top.

The Seven Steps are:

1. Selecting the proper components and components, planning your build

2. Finding the Blank “spine”

3. Preparing and affixing the reel seat and grip

4. Preparing the guides: shaping feet, marking guide position

5. Affixing the guides & basic thread wrapping

6. Mixing Flex Coat, application & curing

7. Decals / epoxy coating “label” area

Steve will have contact information for participants to secure all materials needed.

Follow-up: Monthly Meeting July 29, 2025; Fly Fishing Padre Island National Seashore

Thank you to all that attended our meeting Tuesday night with KC Williams at the Pit Room. We had ~40 people attend to enjoy some good BBQ, fellowship, and hear about fishing Padre Island National Seashore.

Note: There were a few challenges that we are working to address before our next meeting at the Pit Room. Audio Visual (know what we need to do now), noise (there was a boys baseball team in the room with us which is highly unusual), and seeing if we can get a microphone so can hear the speaker.

A few notes from KC’s presentation

Driving the beach: When driving on the beach need to read the sand – hard pack and soft sand (soft sand like sugar cookies). Keep momentum when in soft sand. Good to have a shovel, tire plug kit, and tire inflator in case stuck or a flat. If do have a flat find some driftwood to put jack on so doesn’t sink in sand. Beware of debris on beach that can cause flats.

Read the water. Look for calm water between the beach and the first sandbar. This indicates deeper water where bait and predator fish can be. See picture – does not require wading out to sand bars – can stand on dry beach or minimal amount in water.

Other: Cell phone reception is poor on the beach, but can get better reception on the top of the dunes. Surfline is a good app to find beach conditions – look for short waves with time between swells (8 seconds swell time helps to keep cleaner water and better to fish vs. 5 seconds which can be rougher).

Gear: 6 wt can be fun for smaller fish – heavier for larger fish. Floating line will be impacted more by the waves – may want a sinking tip to get flies deeper. Steel leader if get into toothy fish. Maintain your reels – rinse with clean water each day.

Some of favorite flies. Top water – Sipper Fly, Gurgler (besides normal colors purple and tan can be good), poppers. Subsurface – Clousers (with weight – baitfish colors and don’t forget all white), Kreelex (gold and silver – think spoons), baitfish flies like redfish crack, shrimp patterns, etc. Ladyfish tend to be higher in the water, so let fly sink to get to more desired fish. Tip: Tubes that M&M minis come in make great fly box to carry in pockets (and they don’t crush longer flies). Pictures of some of KC’s favorite flies below.
