Fishing opportunity: Espiritu Santo Bay Lodge, May 17-24 2026, Mike Frankoff

Guys,

I hope you all are doing well and getting on the water.

I have the week of May 17-24 booked at Espiritu Santo Bay Lodge and, unfortunately, will be unable to attend due to a family obligation.

As you may know, available weeks at ESB are rare as the  lodge is booked up well in advance with very few spots available for the 2026 season.

ESB is a premier saltwater fishing destination on the Yucatan and boasts an abundance of Permit, Tarpon, Bonefish, and Snook in a pristine wilderness environment. It is accessed by private air charter from Cancun to the lodge, which is included in the trip cost.

The lodge offers gourmet food and wine and is very well run by a dedicated staff.  The skiffs have been refurbished, and now all have a leaning bars on the casting deck. The guides will meet you at the launch, which is a short drive from the lodge.

It’s a world-class fishery that offers a legitimate shot at a Super Grand Slam.

Report: Guadalupe River Trip Report: Rainbow Trout and White Suckers, February 15, 2026, By Paul E. Robertson

Steve Edwards, Tom Strawther and I headed to  the scenic Guadalupe River for a fly fishing trip Feb.10-13. It was our first trip together this year. We normally have a trip or two earlier in the season, but life’s events just kept getting in the way. We decided to stay in a cabin at Hideout on the Horseshoe rather than our usual tent camping. It rained quite a bit Tuesday night, which confirmed our decision. We enjoy camping. But, not in the rain and mud!

Report: Saltwater Day trip, (boat or kayak) at Lavaca River near Lolita, 2026-01-18-0830 [Sunday morning, 18th of January, 2026, at 8:30]

All of us arrived just before 0830 hours. The weather was clear, but cool. Very little to no wind as we launched. We didn’t go very far, as one of the boats had motor issues.

13 small speckled trout landed between 2 boats and four people. Not exactly hot and heavy, but enough to keep up on the water until about 1400.

All the speckled trout were caught on a fly. The flies that worked were small, less that 2″ and shiny. Working them slow at the drop-off seemed to be the ticket.

The game warden was waiting at the launch, welcoming us back and asking about our success, or lack thereof.

While we were preparing to leave we talked to other anglers, and some of the live bait guys didn’t even get a bite.

I’m seriously considering going again soon.

FW Outing: John Scarborough Sunfish Spectacular, 2nd of May 2026

The May 2025 and 2026 JSSFS Trip Reports are available for viewing, see link2025 and link2026.

2026 JSSFS Trip Description:

Join us for our 23nd annual fun family fishing event and lunch on Saturday, May 2nd, at Damon’s Seven Lakes (D7L). This is a little later in the year than previously. Hopefully the water and air temperature will be warmer, allowing the fish to feed more actively. If you want to camp you may come after 3 pm on Friday, May 1st. Fishing is mostly from the shore, but kickboat, canoe, and/or kayaking are quite successful. Members are encouraged to bring guests. These guests are how we spread the word, and it is always good to have friends on the water. To learn more about how the Texas Flyfishers of Houston (TFF) Club’s John Scarborough Sunfish Spectacular (JSSFS) event came about, please click this link for a video of Puck giving the explanation.

Report: Last day of 2025, Lavaca River

3 TFF’ers fly fished the Lavaca River on Wednesday, 12/31/25.  The strategy was to catch fish post front when the weather settled.  We arrived to 37F weather dressed in down jackets.  When we departed, it was 67F.

Fishing conditions were very good, full sun and calm winds. The bite was very slow all day.  A handful of speckled trout were caught that would only make a Cajun proud.
