Report: 2023-09 Padre Island National Seashore trip

The first of our 11 anglers showed up Friday at 10 o’clock in the morning and the preparations started immediately. Radio checks, rods assembled, coolers moved, flies chosen, TFF flag placed in a holder, boots on, and more. Seven 4X4 vehicles were ready to roll out in short order.

Well, we would have been ready, but we were approached by Federal Park Rangers, asking to see our permit. “Permit?” That was a new one for us. Did you know that you need a permit to fly a flag, for a 501c3 organization, in a national park? Research is currently ongoing to make sure we are in compliance next time. For this time, we took the flag down, and packed it away.

The plan was to find working birds, or feeding fish, stopping only if we saw action. If we got into fish, we would make it to the turtle house to camp.

No birds were working, no fish were flashing, so we drove. There was so little action that we made it all the way to the jetties.

We camped at the jetties no campfire because of the wind, and blowing sand. Our delicious evening meal was heated up, served and devoured with gusto.

We fish the pockets, the jetties, and the surf very few fish came to hand. With so little success we discussed staying at the jetties, but decided to try running the beach again.

The next morning we started driving north, stopping at the occasional fishy looking pockets. Again very few fish were caught.

There were some pelicans working over spanish mackerel out past the breakers, around noon. We watched for a while, hoping that they would make their way to the shore, and into casting range, but it didn’t happen.

Campsite the second night, Saturday, was at the turtle house.

Dinner was absolutely amazing, with way too much food. We ate around the campfire which we used to heat this food.

Sunday morning again nothing was happening, bird wise.

We made it to Yarborough pass by 10 o’clock in the morning. We explored for a few minutes and then rolled on.

We were at the showers by 1130.

Everybody was on their way home. by 12:30.

  1. Thanks for posting. Son and his buddies and I  were there the 19-21st at 18.7 mile. Just one red, trout, lots of lady fish, some shark, small jacks, and a stingray on conventional equipment.Joseph Ochoa
