Fly Fishing for squirrels
Got to try my new 5 weight out on a squirrel today. Tie a peanut on the leader and have some fun. Only downside is they chew up the leader quickly
Harmon Creek trip report, 2021-03
10 anglers sat around the campfire after fishing on Friday. A lot of fish were caught, mostly white bass. Yellow bass, largemouth bass, freshwater drum, gar, and buffalo also came to hand.
Continue readingTrip Report – Saltwater Outing @ West Galveston Bay
On Saturday, 20-March-2021, six club members participated in the monthly saltwater outing to West Galveston Bay. Four members met at the Waterman’s Marina at about 7:30 AM and launched from that boat ramp while two members launched from the adjacent Galveston Island State Park.

Conditions were clear with temperatures in the morning in the low 50s warming to the low 60s in the afternoon with a North wind at 14-16 mph. The wind chill made it colder and the intensity of the wind resulted in using conventional gear throughout the day.

The fishing areas, Lake Como and Dana Cove, offered solidly good wading with a mostly sand bottom but there were pockets of soft mud to make it interesting. During the outing very little bait was seen, no fish were spooked and there were very few working birds. A limited number of other anglers were also in the area wade fishing – throwing soft plastics with little success. One reported catching two flounder but most were empty handed.

At around 2:00 PM we called it a day and paddled back to our vehicles. With the wind at our backs the paddling was considerable easier than on the way out. While the catching was poor the fishing was good. Getting out in nature with the bright blue sky and fellowship made for an enjoyable day for all those that came out.
Coyote spinner fly used at Harmon Creek
Those of us that used this fly on Harmon Creek know why I plan to make a video on it this week.
Hook: TMC 200R, only because I have a bunch of these.
Thread: 180-240D, color to match top fiber colors of fly
Eyes: Lead dumbbell, 1/80 oz or smaller. Also you could use bead chain for the eyes in an effort to reduce weight.
Spinner assembly:
- Colorado blade size 00
- Split rings, size 0
- Roller swivels, size 12 or 14, this is completely dependent on being able to get the swivel onto the hook. I like to go as small as I can.
Paint: Chartreuse fingernail polish, with black fingernail polish pupil
Bottom: SF fibers, off-white
Top: SF Fibers, rainbow
Here are some other variations of the theme.
Speaker-March 30, 2021 Monthly Meeting – Jerry Coviello; Fly Fishing for Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley and Wyoming’s Greybull River
First a little bit about our speaker, Jerry Coviello. A resident of Pennsylvania and a long time fly fisher and Fly Fishers International (FFI) member, in 2017 Jerry was selected as Chairman of the Board of Governors of FFI’s Fly Tying Group (FTG). In that position, Jerry has been a driving force in updating the FTG’s website and has developed a Beginner Fly Tying Workshop, which is a downloadable product for chapters/clubs and individuals to download and use to learn about fly tying and how to get started tying flies. For those of you interested in fly tying or in learning about tying flies, visit the FFI website https://flyfishersinternational.org/Tying/Fly-Tying-Group Additionally, with regard to fly tying, Jerry hosts a weekly tying class on his Facebook Page, “Jerry’s Fly Tying Tips”.
Jerry’s presentation will open with a brief discussion of the FFI Tying Programs and then cut into his presentation, Fishing for Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley and Wyoming’s Greybull River.
Through the miracle of video technology, Jerry will walk us through Yellowstone National Park which will serve as a reminder that the park sits on top of a volcano caldera. Wyoming’s Greybull River runs through some of the most remote backcountry in the Greater Yellowstone. Along its 90-mile corridor, water travels from snow-capped peaks in the Absaroka Mountains to sagebrush flats at its confluence with the Bighorn River. The Greybull River watershed is famed for supporting the best genetically-pure populations left of Yellowstone cutthroat trout, a species decimated elsewhere in the West by non-native species and altered water flows. In that regard, the river’s high-quality aquatic habitat is spurring efforts among many landowners to join with partners to protect and restore this biologically-important watershed.
So, if you are interested in fly fishing in the Yellowstone area or are just interested in learning more about fly fishing in any respect, you will not want to miss this presentation. Be sure and look for your e mail from club Secretary, Eric Richardson or Membership Chairman, Bob Brill with details about joining the zoom meeting.
TFF members will be receiving an e mail containing a link to join the meeting.
