Report: Lavaca River 2026-04-08

Tax day came early on the Lavaca River.

Wednesday, April 8th, three fly fishermen visited the Lavaca River west of Lolita for some kayak fishing.  River and weather conditions were excellent.

The bite was slow all morning with 6 fish between the 3 of us.

Nothing we threw worked very well.

The man in the grey suit showed up to collect taxes and took my 19” speckled trout from my stringer.  He was a 4-5 footer that yanked on my stringer two ties before taking off with my dinner.  I also paid more taxes when I lost my anchor.  Puck paid his taxes by losing a spinning rod as it was yanked out of his hands by a large speck.

A fun day on the Lavaca.

Conditions:

fishing time:  0745 – 1230

Lavaca river flow:  0.7 CFS;  strong incoming tide stalled river current at 1030

Water clarity:  good at 12”.

wind:  calm till 0930, then 10 mph

air temp:  55F on arrival, 80F on departure

water temp:  upper 70’s

Bait:  very little

Tackle used:  2x 8wts with Intermediate and sinking lines.

Threw:  buzz grub, Kreelex, sst and strawboss.

  1. Is the monthly meeting shifting BACK TO THE PIT ROOM? Last meeting was at Nikos, website says Pit Room again.
