I think this is an opportunity to give the educators of the youth of that region a hand in a great program. Here is what I have from Omar and Chris. Chris L. owns and operates, the Blue Bonefish Lodge, and was a guest speaker last year. Omar runs the fly fishing camps and has done so for quite a few years, bringing the skills and passion of the sport to the local youths.
Good Afternoon Gentlemen,
After speaking with Omar, he is in most need of some used 7 or 8wt fly rods for his kids summer camp. He is looking for the lower end models, new or used, that he can keep with him to travel to his different locations throughout the year. His goal is to have a rod for each of his students. Blue Bonefish Lodge is also looking to donate some of their used fly rods to the program this season.
For over 20 year Omars fly fishing camps have averaged between 12-16 kids that range from the ages of 8-14 years old, and he teaches them over a week course knot tying, how to string rods, leader construction, flats conservation and education, etc…He has 6 camps each summer starting in San Pedro, then goes to 5 different villages on the coastal mainland.
Omar would be happy to explain his program in more detail to the club if there is a 10-15min spot available at one of your virtual monthly meetings. Omar is a great speaker and presenter.
Omar has also secured a duty free exemption for the rods to be brought to Belize tax free.
Looking forward to getting the club’s thoughts to see if there is any potential to help his program.
Kind Regards,
Chris
If you have a gently used fly rod that you are willing to donate, contact “Puck” as he is headed there after the middle of March.
As of 2026-01-27: So far we have had good responses with a few rods, a couple of reels, and a handful of lines.
