Obituary for Christopher Walcott Sumers (Chris)

Christopher Walcott Sumers (Chris), 68, passed away at his home on April 7, 2025, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving wife, family and loved ones. Chris was born on June 2, 1956, in Houston, TX to the late George W. “Sonny” Sumers, Jr. and Aubin Cox Sumers. He was a loving husband, son, stepfather, brother, and loyal friend to many.

Chris went to St Philip School, El Campo High School, and the University of Texas at Austin. He had a successful 35-year career with Halliburton.

Chris was an accomplished sportsman in both hunting and fishing and was the 1973 NSSA World Shoot Champion in .410-gauge skeet. Chris served as Vice President and was a long-time member of the Texas Flyfishers of Houston (TexasFlyfishers.org), assisting in many capacities including Chairman for the Dr. Ed Rizzolo Fly Tying Festival and Saltwater Outing Chairman. He was a past winner of the prestigious Sweetened Hook Award, an active member of the Federation of Fly Fishers Gulf Coast Council, and a lifelong ambassador of the sport to all he met.

When Chris was not fishing, he was in the kitchen, cooking up a gourmet meal or smoking meat in the backyard. He was known for his made-from-scratch Key Lime pie, Seafood Gumbo, Jerk Chicken with yellow rice and black beans, and many more delicious foods.

Chris was survived by his wife, Donna Sumers; step-son, Jody Woodruff and wife Sandra; brother, Bill Sumers and wife Helen Dale; sister, Lorey Sumers Quintero and husband Joe; niece, Hannah Aubin Sumers Hawkins and husband Jack; nephews, Frank Cobb Vaughan, Jr, Seth Sumers Vaughan, Sprague Peterson Sumers, and Trent Bruce Sumers.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Sprague Sumers.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 17 at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. Immediately following the memorial service, a Celebration of Life will take place at the home of John & Hanh (Anna) Schmermund at 211 Legends Way, El Campo, TX 77437.
