Report: Lavaca River fly fishing – Wednesday 3/26/25

Despite Monday’s rain, the Lavaca River only experienced a flow bump, not a spike in flow.  I thought the river would still be salty.  Winds were forecasted to be low….. Time to go fishing.

Arrived to dense fog, 70F temperature, salty river water and dead calm wind conditions.  Launched the kayak at 0800.

First time since November that I haven’t worn waders ….. much more comfortable.

The bite was slow at the start and end of the trip.  The bite turned on at 0900 for about 25 minutes and most of fish were landed then.

Fish were found on the drop-off in about 5 ft deep water.

Wind turned on at 1000 at about 15mph.

Fished till noon.

I saw 3 other powerboats go by and 1 bank fisherman all morning.   Closest fisherman was 0.5 miles away.

I’m still looking for my first Lavaca River redfish.  I only seem to catch speckled trout……..

Equipment used:
kayak
8 wt flyrod with sinking line
8 wt flyrod with intermediate line
Flies that worked:  Strawboss + Kreelex
Lavaca River flow = 12 ft3/sec
Fish caught:  2 hands worth of specled trout;  14” avg

tight lines and screaming reels
