SW Outing: Padre Island National Seashore, October 9-11th, 2026, change of date

We had an outing conflict. This later date may also give us cooler weather, lower tides, and fewer vampires.

Texas FlyFishers of Houston: 2026 PINS (Padre Island National Seashore), advance planning
Trip Description: We will take four-wheel drive vehicles down Padre Island National Seashore during the anchovy migration, (which we have missed the last 4 years) and target blitzing schools of ladyfish, jacks, redfish, and tarpon.  We will beach camp Friday and Saturday nights, returning on Sunday.

When:    October 9-11th, 2026
Where:       Padre Island National Seashore, 20420 Park Road 22, Corpus Christi, Texas
Start Time:  1100, Friday morning
End Time:    Sunday, at noon, 2 days later

Meet at Malaquite about 11am on Friday to be prepared for a noon departure. Plan is to leave Malaquite around noon and run down” to “Big Shell”, and camp in that area.    

A quick run to the jetties Saturday morning, move back to a camp spot between the 40 and 30 mile marker and then the next day, Sunday, fish on the way back.  Showers at Malaquite, load for the return about 1400 and drive home.

Meeting, new location: 2026-04-28, Getting ready for the John Scarborough Sunfish Spectacular

The TFF monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday 28 of April, 2026. Our topic will be on fly fishing for sunfish at Damon 7 Lakes. This may help you in preparation for our annual Sunfish Spectacular. This is our annual fun family fishing event Saturday, 2nd of May 2026, at Damon Seven Lakes.

Topics covered include gear for sunfish, our favorite flies, how to fish them, a review of Damon Seven Lakes and the different options to fish.

During the socializing pre-meeting we will have some fly tying going on.

Howard is also planning to bring books from storage in an attempt to re-home them.

MEETING UPDATE: April 28th, 2026, change in location, date, and time

Because of the noise issues we have had in the last 2 locations we tried, we have a NEW MONTHLY MEETING LOCATION, DATE, and TIME FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE starting with the April 28th, 2026 monthly meeting. The new details are:

Date: Last Tues of each month
Time: 6-9pm (6-7: Social hour; 7-9 Meeting)
Location: St. Thomas Presbyterian Church, 14100 Memorial Dr. Houston, TX  77079 Google maps

Social Hour: 6-7 pm
We will have a “social hour” from 6-7. Time to reconnect with friends, tell stories about life, fishing, etc. WE also plan to have some of our local fly tiers on hand demonstrating some tips and tricks.

Meeting Start Time: 7-9 pm
The meeting will begin promptly at 7pm and run no later than 9pm (most likely 830pm). The format will remain the same. Meeting will start with introduction of new attendees, reports outs from the various chairs (outings, finance, membership, etc), then the guest speaker.

We will continue to announce the monthly speakers with “posts” prior to the meeting.

Steve Edwards, Tom Strawther and I headed to  the scenic Guadalupe River for a fly fishing trip Feb.10-13. It was our first trip together this year. We normally have a trip or two earlier in the season, but life’s events just kept getting in the way. We decided to stay in a cabin at Hideout on the Horseshoe rather than our usual tent camping. It rained quite a bit Tuesday night, which confirmed our decision. We enjoy camping. But, not in the rain and mud!

FW Outing: 2026 South Llano River Float (Thursday through Sunday, April 23-26, 2026.)

The South Llano Trip is in the works now. The Club has to pay for 2 cabins for 3 nights regardless of how many people come and stay. We are also have other lodging locked in next door. This annual Club trip is one of the few opportunities to get out to the Hill Country and to fish one of the most productive rivers in the State. 2023 year’s event was cancelled due to weather, so please consider making your plans ASAP.

FW Outing: Update for JSSFS 2025, Mom’s Day Special

Now that we have been reminded that this is the Saturday before Mother’s Day, we knew we had to do something to celebrate. For this year’s event we have a special deal for Mom’s, (current members of Texas FlyFishers), attending the event.

Bring your kid, or kids, and get in free!

This is THE family friendly event of the year!

Join us for our annual fun family fishing event and lunch on Saturday, (confirm date), at Damon Seven Lakes. If you’re lucky, you can earn the chance to capture the John Scarborough Sunfish Spectacular Trophy!

Fishing from the shore, but kickboat, canoe, and/or kayak are quite successful.

Contrary to the name there are now nine different, unique lakes of good size that hold largemouth bass, tiger bass, catfish, black crappie, and bluegill. Catching bass in the three to five pound range is a normal occurrence. Twelve pound bass, decent channel cats, and twelve inch bream have been caught in the last four years.

The South Llano Trip is just over the horizon. We have only a small number of members signed up at this time. The Club has to pay for 2 cabins for 3 nights regardless of how many people come and stay. If married couples come, our host Nol, has offered us (couples) an additional place to stay. This annual Club trip is one of the few opportunities to get out to the Hill Country and to fish one of the most productive rivers in the State. 2023 year’s event was cancelled due to weather, so please consider making your plans ASAP.
