Texas Fly Fishers to hold its 13th Annual Summer  Mini Expo, Saturday, August 20, 2022; 9:00 am – 4:30 pm

Come enjoy a fun filled day of: Fly Tying, Casting Instruction and Demonstrations, Travel Presentations and Rod Building Exhibitions along with a day which will include drawings for Prizes, at Terrace United Methodist Church, 1203 Wirt Road, Houston, Texas 77055

The Texas Fly Fishers will present its 13th Annual Summer Mini Fly Fishing Exposition, Saturday, August 20, 2022, 8:30 am until 4:30 pm which will include fly fishing related topics of interest to most every fly fisher be they beginner, intermediate or expert!

History of the Annual Summer Mini Expo

Most Texas FlyFisher’s monthly meetings play to a full house; every month with the exception August. For some reason, the August meeting was drawing less than half of the audience of the other 10 months. So, in 2009, then Club President David Lemke came up with a plan to pick up the August monthly meeting attendance. David’s idea was, instead of holding a typical meeting with a guest speaker, to hold a mini expo featuring the club membership’s talent at fly tying, rod building, knot tying / leader building, casting and fly fishing destination travel and to do so in an exposition format.

So, the first Texas Fly Fishers Summer Mini Expo was held on August 25th 2009 at Bayland Community Center, the same venue as the club’s monthly meetings at that time. Inside the Center, club members were set up to demonstrate their prowess at fly tying, rod building, basic knot tying, leader basics and rigging. Other members were on hand to report on their trips to destinations such as the Bighorn River in Montana, the Guadalupe River in the Texas Hill Country, fly fishing for salmon in Alaska and fly fishing along the Texas Gulf Coast. Outside, the Club’s Fly Fly Fishers International Certified Casting Instructors were holding casting demonstrations and clinics. The night went on without a hitch and was closed with a drawing for some great prizes.

After the success of the initial Mini Expo, it was decided to make this an annual event with the only change coming in 2014, when it was decided to move the Summer Mini Expo from the traditional last Tuesday night of the month to the Saturday before and making it a day-long event in hopes of offering a few additional programs and in an effort to attract a few more interested fly fishers. Since its inception, the Mini Expo has continued to grow; so, the club is looking for another large turnout at this year’s event. We look forward to seeing you there!

Fly Tying

Inside, there will be non-stop fly tying demonstration and instruction. Learn tips and techniques or, how to tie that special pattern of interest to you from the club’s fly tying members.

Rod Building

Club members who participate in the rod building section of fly fishing will be demonstrating their custom built rods and will be available to discuss rod building techniques. 

Casting

Have ever wanted to learn how to fly cast but, you didn’t know how to go about it? Well, here is your chance. At the Mini Expo, you will have the opportunity to receive personal, individualized casting instruction from Fly Fishers International Certified Casting Instructors. Additionally, casting clinics will be offered on specific casting techniques such as fly fishing in saltwater, casting in the wind and the basic essentials of fly casting. So, come learn the basics or take your skills to the next level!

All participants are encouraged to bring their own rod with line and leader for the casting clinics; however, the Texas FlyFishers will have a limited supply of rods for anyone who is interested in participating but did not bring a rod.

On Saturday ,February 11, 2023, The Texas FlyFishers will host the 30th Annual Dr. Ed Rizzolo Fly Tying Festival. So, start planning now to attend this great event and spend the day watching and participating in a day of tying flies!  Stand by for further details!

Speaker, Monthly Meeting June 28, 2022; Mike Green; Fly Fishing New Zealand

At the June 28, 2022 monthly meeting of the Texas Fly Fishers, club member Mike Green will be our guest speaker.

Mike is a very experienced fly angler who has fly fished internationally and will be on hand to tell us about fly fishing in New Zealand, which is considered by many fly anglers to be the number one international destination for fly fishing.

There is no charge for admission and all are welcome at the meeting. Very few get the opportunity to fly fish New Zealand as has Mike so you will not want to miss this presentation.

So, if you are interested in learning more about the fly fishing world, if you are interested in watching some fly tying before the meeting or are just interested in socializing with a friendly group of fly fishing men and women come to the June 28, 2022 monthly meeting.  We would be glad to have you and look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

Speaker, Monthly Meeting, Tuesday, May 31, 2022; Texas Hill Country guide Kevin Hutchison

At the Tuesday, May 31, 2022 monthly meeting of the Texas Fly Fishers, Kevin Hutchison http://hillcountryflyfishers.com will be making a presentation about fly fishing the Texas Hill Country – where to go and how to fish those locations.  In that regard, Kevin is an Orvis endorsed guide who has been guiding the rivers of the Texas Hill Country for 20+ years.  He is also a Federation of Fly Fishers International Certified Casting Instructor, is a very accomplished fly tyer and is the author of a book titled: Fly Fishing the Texas Hill Country which is considered by many to be the bible of regional fly fishing lore, lies and locations.

Additionally and of special note, Kevin will be assisting the club with the club trip to the Colorado River on June 18, 2022 so if you are planning to participate in that event or are especially interested in fly fishing the Colorado River this will be an excellent chance to discuss that particular river in detail with someone who is very knowledgeable.

There is no charge for admission and all are welcome at the meeting. Kevin is not only an experienced angler, he is also a talented speaker. You will not want to miss this presentation.

Speaker, Monthly Meeting, July 26th Ron Mayfield; Chetumal/Ascension Bay, Mexico

At the July 26th monthly meeting of the Texas Fly Fishers, long time club member Ron Mayfield will be our guest speaker.

Ron is a very experienced fly angler, a Fly Fishers International Certified Casting Instructor and a Signature Fly Tyer with the Umpqua Fly Fishing Company. Additionally, Ron is currently serving as the fly tying chairman for the Texas Council of Fly Fishers International. Ron’s topic will be about fly fishing Chetumal/Ascension Bay, Mexico.

There is no charge for admission and all are welcome at the meeting. Ron is not only an experienced angler, he is also a talented speaker. You will not want to miss this presentation.

Our next in person meeting of the Texas Fly Fishers is Tuesday March 29 @ 7:00 pm. Doors are open ~6 -9 6:30 pm for fellowship and swapping fish stories. This month we are glad to welcome Scott Osborne as our speaker.

Scott Osborne, the US Representative for Avalon Outdoor, has been involved in fly fishing destination travel for the better part of a decade. He is enthusiastic about sharing the uniqueness of Cuba and spreading the word of conservation and amazing saltwater fly fishing opportunities to people everywhere.

Avalon Outdoor has been in Cuba for 30 years with the primary focus on protecting the vulnerable marine areas in Cuba while offering the highest quality fly fishing trips in the Caribbean. Through a unique model and innovative partnerships, Avalon has made it their mission to create a sustainable business that effectively preserves and protects the marine parks of Cuba while fostering wonderful opportunities for Cubans to live successful lives as stewards of their coastal resources. Furthermore, in this model of sustainable conservation, Avalon has created a legal pathway for US citizens to visit Cuba and take part in this program while enjoying themselves fly fishing for a week in the most pristine marine areas in the Caribbean.

TUESDAY Feburary 22, 2022-Trini Mendenhall Community Center; MONTHLY SPEAKER: Richard Gardner

Our next in person meeting of the Texas Fly Fishers is Tuesday February 22 @ 7:00 pm. Doors are open ~6 – 6:30 pm for fellowship and swapping fish stories. This month we are glad to welcome Richard Gardner as our speaker.

Richard grew up in Pasadena, TX and currently resides in Seabrook.  He is married with a 5 and 6 year old who love to get out on the water with him when time allows.  

He runs a fly fishing guide service that focuses on west Galveston bay to as far south as East Matagorda depending on the conditions.  This is his 5th year guiding and has been fly fishing the saltwater for the last 11 years.  He grew up wading and sight casting redfish with conventional gear on the San Bernard  River where his family had a river house.   He currently operates a Sabine Skiff and fish 120+ days a year and enjoy every minute of it.  

His presentation will focus on west  Galveston and how he likes to fish it.  I.E.  tides, winds, clouds and or clear skies, clarity, grass, sand flats, Marsh etc…how does he determine where to fish and if his clients are flexible with travel.

Some topics will include:

Flies:  Redfish crack, seaducers and my go to favorite color.  Sheepshead flies…
Gear:  skiff…why is his boat set up the way it is, rods, reels, leader and general setup.  

We are looking forward to Richard sharing his knowledge with us and appreciate his time.

Fly Shop – Living Waters Fly Fishing

At the Tuesday, June 29, 2021 monthly meeting of the Texas Fly Fishers, Chris Johnson http://livingwatersflyfishing.com/guide-service/ will be making a presentation about Fly Fishing for Bass & Pan Fish including fly fishing on the Guadalupe, Llano River and San Gabriel Rivers .  

In that regard, Chris grew up in Round Rock Texas where he is based and has been fishing the waters in that area all his life. He is an experienced fly tyer, caster, guide and is also the producer of “Unspoken-the Pursuit of Rio Grande Cutthroat” http://livingwatersflyfishing.com/unspoken/ which was produced in conjunction with Trout Unlimited to raise awareness and funding for conservation projects for the benefit of Rio Grande Cutthroat. All funds raised by the movie go to benefit this project.

So, if you are interested in learning about fly fishing for bass and pan fish or about fly fishing in any respect, you will not want to miss this presentation. If you are a club member, be sure and look for your e mail from club Secretary, Eric Richardson or Membership Chairman, Bob Brill with details about joining the zoom meeting.

Speaker-March 30, 2021 Monthly Meeting – Jerry Coviello; Fly Fishing for Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley and Wyoming’s Greybull River

First a little bit about our speaker, Jerry Coviello. A resident of Pennsylvania and a long time fly fisher and Fly Fishers International (FFI) member, in 2017 Jerry was selected as Chairman of the Board of Governors of FFI’s Fly Tying Group (FTG). In that position, Jerry has been a driving force in updating the FTG’s website and has developed a Beginner Fly Tying Workshop, which is a downloadable product for chapters/clubs and individuals to download and use to learn about fly tying and how to get started tying flies. For those of you interested in fly tying or in learning about tying flies, visit the FFI website https://flyfishersinternational.org/Tying/Fly-Tying-Group   Additionally, with regard to fly tying, Jerry hosts a weekly tying class on his Facebook Page, “Jerry’s Fly Tying Tips”.

Jerry’s presentation will open with a brief discussion of the FFI Tying Programs and then cut into his presentation, Fishing for Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley and Wyoming’s Greybull River. 

Through the miracle of video technology, Jerry will walk us through Yellowstone National Park which will serve as a reminder that the park sits on top of a volcano caldera. Wyoming’s Greybull River runs through some of the most remote backcountry in the Greater Yellowstone. Along its 90-mile corridor, water travels from snow-capped peaks in the Absaroka Mountains to sagebrush flats at its confluence with the Bighorn River. The Greybull River watershed is famed for supporting the best genetically-pure populations left of Yellowstone cutthroat trout, a species decimated elsewhere in the West by non-native species and altered water flows. In that regard, the river’s high-quality aquatic habitat is spurring efforts among many landowners to join with partners to protect and restore this biologically-important watershed.

So, if you are interested in fly fishing in the Yellowstone area or are just interested in learning more about fly fishing in any respect, you will not want to miss this presentation.
