I just received an email from a mutual friend. Here is the email:
Steve McDonald here. I was Membership Chairman for a period in the 90’s and early 2000’s. I’m still on the e-mail list, but I haven’t been an active member since probably 2004 or so. I left Houston at the end of 2001 and have only made it back infrequently. Tom Lyons and I were inseparable fishing buddies while we were both there and very active in the Club.
I got a call from Tom’s wife, Gay, yesterday that Tom had passed away on the 19th. I thought I should send a notice to the Club of his passing because there are probably several folks still around who would like to know. There are no services planned as yet, and I’m not sure if there will be anything in Texas as he has been living in Maryland close to family for the last few years. Tom had an aggressive form of cancer and passed only 5 days after the diagnosis. He was 83 years old.
Please keep me on the e-mail list, as I really enjoy reading about the ‘goings-on’ with the Club. I’m fishing for trout – the fresh water kind- now, but I miss the saltwater quite a bit. It’s great to see that the Club is still going strong.
Many kind regards,
Steve McDonald
So sorry to hear about Tom, I always enjoyed seeing him at the meetings. He kind of took our youngest son under his wing to teach him about fly fishing. (probably 20+ years ago) He will be missed.
Tom was an awesome guy. He was the person that got me into Texas Fly Fishers. Friendliest person ever. Will miss him. Let us know if there are local services.
Very sad to hear. When I first became interested in
So sad to hear. When I first became interested in flyfishing and joined the club, and barely knew a fly rod from a broomstick, Tom always took the time to encourage. I remember a club outing at a lake out near Winnie, Tom brought his boat and was having engine trouble, yet he still took the time out to give me pointers on my abysmal casting. I will never forget that. Rest in Peace, Tom.
