Report: Three Days On The River, A Summer Fishing Journey, Joe Nicklo

I closed out the month of June with a three-day run on the river with Barry Annalora. This was the second year that the  group from Colorado, Texas, and Utah embarked on this adventure.  It takes some planning, but somehow it always comes together. Most of the group aims for a full day of fishing, taking advantage of the topwater bite, while others are content to fish whenever the fish are biting. Unfortunately, early morning hours didn’t favor our terrestrial bite this year due to water flow and previous family commitments, so we decided to start our days basking in the summer sun.

Day one was likely our most successful day in terms of numbers. The bugs were out early, and so were the browns. The boys were just getting the bugs worked out, so several flies ended up deep in the wood line, but we managed to bring some quality fish to the boat.

Day two proved to be much slower; casts seemed to fall short or go too far, lining the rising trout. When Eric asked if we could just catch some fish, I headed to the dam and ran a few indicator rigs. Much to Scott’s surprise, we found a monster brown just shy of 26 inches, making the trip upriver worthwhile.

  1. Congratulations to you all on what seems to have been a fantastic trip – unfortunately lots of rain, high rivers and coloured water is screwing up my fishing plans – maybe next week!!!! Eric
