Report: Sabine River 2023-10

Two of us arrived at the cabin around 2 o’clock on Tuesday, unloaded what we had to from our vehicles, got our gear ready and immediately headed toward the river.

Backing down the improved boat ramp is always a challenge. It had been a while and I had forgotten that there is a curve that you have to follow as you go down the hill.

We got the kayaks in the water and we immediately started catching fish within sight of the boat launch. Most of the fish were caught on top waters. We were off the water by about 1830, right before sundown and between the two of us we caught over 30 fish. Not bad for such a quick trip.

The cabin was comfortable and the air conditioner worked well. A quick dinner which John provided went down well. We were both tired from the long drive and a little bit of fishing/kayaking we did.

The next morning we got up fairly early, 0500. Once we had our coffee, we loaded everything up and made it to the river by just a little bit after sunrise. Our plan was to fish the generation canal till about one or 2 o’clock, and then move over to Coldwater, on the Louisiana side and fishing till dark. However, the fishing was so good in the generation canal that we never left until we had to, around 1730. We had covered 7 miles on the water and between us caught over 80 fish. Again, almost all were on topwater flies.

Dinner was a bit earlier than the night before. The plan for Thursday, our last morning, as we had to be checked out of the cabin by 1100, was to explore “Coldwater” and spend a few hours fishing. The storm that came in a 0430 put a stop to that plan. Thunder and lightning continued until well after sunrise, robbing our chances of getting safely on the water.

Late breakfast and coffee, along with a leisurely packout/clean-up, was the updated plan of action.
