Members,
We regret to announce that we are canceling the upcoming Padre Island outing on October 9-11 because of the approaching tropical storm.
Members of the board spoke with our emergency management contact in Corpus Christi. The good news is that the storm’s center is about 70 to 90 miles offshore. It is expected to turn east in the next few hours, then north on Saturday, and may make landfall between Louisiana and Alabama as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane.
Even so, conditions on our end won’t cooperate. Rain should ease around midday Friday, but brief showers, lightning, and wind gusts that would challenge even experienced casters are still likely. Rough seas and heavy seaweed are expected to persist through Sunday, which makes surf fishing difficult. Tonight’s tide is also forecast to reach the base of the dunes, so beach access at Padre Island National Seashore may stay closed until the water recedes.
Because this is one of our best saltwater outings of the year, we don’t want to combine it with another event or let it become a poor substitute. Instead, we plan to reschedule for January or February 2027. We’ll share a date as soon as we confirm one.
