Casting Class: Learning the Double Haul – Saturday, November 20, 2021

On Saturday, November 20, 2021 the club will be holding a class to teach a casting technique known as the “double haul”.  The “double haul” is a technique many equate with distance casting; however, it has several other benefits which are applicable to fly casting and fly fishing in both salt and freshwater environments. This class would be appropriate for those who know nothing or little about the double haul and for those who are interested in reviewing the fundamentals of the technique.

There will be no charge to Texas Fly Fishers members for this class.

Federation of Fly Fishers International Certified Instructors will be on hand for the clinic.  Details pertaining to the clinic are as follows:

Date: Saturday November 20, 2021

Time/hours: 9 am to approximately 11 am (participants should have their rod assembled and strung up by 9 am so that the clinic can start on time.)

Clinic Topic: The purpose of the clinic will be to learn a casting technique known as “the double haul”.

Skill Level: This clinic will be most helpful to advanced beginner and intermediate anglers.

Location: This class will be held at Tom Bass Park near the intersection of Highway 288 & The Sam Houston Toll Way.  Detailed directions with regard to the specific location at the Park are below.

The location within Tom Bass Park is near the Amphitheater : Directions to the location in Tom Bass Park from downtown Houston:

  1. Get on SH-288 south toward Lake Jackson;
  2. Take the exit toward Beltway 8, Sam Houston Tollway;
  3. Turn left onto S Sam Houston Parkway E (don’t get onto Beltway 8);
  4. About 1/2 mile from the turn onto S Sam Houston Parkway, you will see a Chevron Gas Station/Convenience Store on the Right; IMMEDIATELY after passing the Station/ Store you will see Tom Bass Reg Park Road; Turn Right onto Tom Bass Reg Park Road;

Tom Bass Reg Park Road will dead end into a Parking lot for the Amphitheater; park there;

There is a small open green space between the Amphitheater and a small pond;

The class will be set up in the open green space between the Amphitheater and the pond.

** Note: Club loaner rods will be available upon request. Also, an Evite invitation will be sent to club members. If you will be attending the casting clinic and will need to use one of the club rods, when you respond to the Evite invitation please indicate in the comments section of this post that you would like to use one of the club rods.

** Note: Casting will be done with a piece of yarn or other fiber attached to the fly line leaders-no hooks will be used. If you will be participating, please have a piece of yarn or fiber of some sort attached to your leader. If you do not have this type of material available, please arrive early and a piece of yarn or other similar material will be furnished and if necessary attached by one of the instructors.
