Tom Lyons Fly Fishing Academy

Texas FlyFishers fly fishing academy casting instruction clinic at the Meyer Park ponds

Registration: Course dates to be rescheduled, stay tuned.

Last class:

Registration fee: $50

Registration for this course is held at 6:30 pm on the SECOND TUESDAY OF MARCH, at Bethany Christian Church (Map), with the first class starting immediately upon completion of registration. There are five 2-hour classroom sessions, held at the church, and four 2-hour Saturday Morning casting classes, held at the Meyer Park ponds (directions are provided at the first class). The casting classes are on the Saturdays following the  classroom classes, and are typically held from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.

This program is designed to teach the most basic of fly fishing beginner about the rods, the reels, the lines, the leaders and tippets, and how to tie the most basic knots, in a classroom setting. There is also a class on other items, such as waders, wading shoes, vests, glasses, etc., that are also essential to the fly fisher. Safety while pursuing the sport is stressed throughout the course.

The proper way to hold the rod and the line for casting is the starting point for the casting classes, and progresses from there to an introduction to the basics of a double-haul cast in the last casting class. Upon completion of the casting classes, the student will be fully capable of making a 30-40 ft, or more, cast with ease.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to fish wherever they choose with confidence that they can catch fish. (The fish just have to cooperate!)

  1. Need a place to tie or just want to get inspired, well then fishing tackle unlimited on the Katy freeway is hosting limited space for you. Just bring your vise and tools and materials on Saturdays from 9:30am til 12 noon. There will be a 10% discount on material purchased that day. Starts this Saturday and then every other Saturday in February and March. Here are the dates 2/13,2/27, 3/12, and 3/26.

  2. Will there be any fly fishing classes in the next couple of months? Are the March classes held each year?

  3. Hello, my friends and I are interested in taking Fly Fisherman Academy.

    1. Is there a schedule for the course in terms of when the classes are held (specifically the first class is it Thursday, March 9th or Friday, March 10th?)?
    2. What we need to bring to the first class?
    3. Who to contact to register for the course?

    Thanks!
    -Eric

  5. David,
Your March 2017 class beginning on the 10th but on your description it said that registration (Second Tuesday of March) that would make the registration date of March 14th. Can you clarified what date is the registration for the March 10 beginning fly fishing class?

    Thanks
    Hugh

  6. This is just the thing I need to get me going, I’m new to the fly fishing world . I can’t wait to start this .

  7. Pamela,
You are correct there are only 4 days scheduled for the 2018 Fly Fishing Academy. As mentioned due to lack of availability of Bethany Christian Church on 3 April two of the classes were consolidated this year.
If you still are interested, hope to see you at registration on Tuesday, 13 March.
