HAVE YOU BEEN WONDERING IF THE RECENT FREEZE/WEATHER EVENT RESULTED IN A SIGNIFICANT FISH KILL ON THE GULF COAST?

At the April Monthly Meeting of the Texas Fly Fishers, to be held via zoom technology beginning at 7:00 pm on Tuesday April 27, two biologists from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Christopher Steffen and Claire Iseton will be making a presentation which will discuss the state of the Gulf Coast fishery in light of the recent freeze/weather event.

In the above regard, Christopher Steffen’s most significant field of study is the small and large scale connectivity of marine fishes, with an emphasis on how it relates to wildlife management. Christopher’s graduate program research involved studying the ingress and egress patterns of southern flounder (Paralichthys lethostigma) in Galveston Bay utilizing acoustic telemetry which provided information about the timing of migration events, aiding in the identification of critical migration pathways and spawning time periods. As a natural resource specialist in the Coastal Fisheries division for Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD), Christopher is now involved in the regular monitoring of fish populations in the Galveston Bay system. Along with Christopher, Claire Iseton will also be part of this presentation and discussion. Claire Iseton is a Coastal Ecologist with the Ecosystem Resources Program specializing in fish and wildlife kills and pollution event investigations that impact coastal waters of the upper Texas coast.  Claire holds a Master’s degree in Marine Biology from Texas A&M University at Galveston and has particular interest in the ecology of migratory species, including sea turtles, fish, and birds. In her free time she enjoys fishing, crabbing, birdwatching, and playing the drums. Claire is also a member of the TPWD Spills and Kills Team.
