Speaker, Monthly Meeting, August 25, 2020; Spence McNamara; Eagle Scout Project Presentation: “Memories”

At the Tuesday, August 25, 2020 monthly meeting of the Texas Fly Fishers, to be held via Zoom technology, Spence McNamara will be presenting and discussing his Eagle Scout Project which will include a film, titled “memories”, which he made for Casting for Recovery to use in promotional activities.

Spence’s mother, Nancy, loved the outdoors and was just learning how to fly fish in 2015.  In March 2015, Spence and his family were on a family fishing vacation at the Norfork River in Arkansas when she hooked her first fish on a fly – an 18 inch rainbow – and was so “amped” that you could hear and feel her excitement up and down the river.  When she was done – she just looked and with a huge smile said “I get it”.  The next month, she attended the CfR retreat and had a great time.  By this time she had been going through cancer treatment for metastatic breast cancer for 2+ years (after having gone through “regular” breast cancer treatment earlier). She told her family that the CfR retreat was by far and away the most beneficial  and rewarding therapy program she had experienced. The video Spence will be presenting is intended to be a way to hopefully help CfR with their mission.

In the above regard, Spence has been a youth member of the Texas Fly Fishers for several years and will soon be entering college; he is an impressive young man.

He is an Eagle Scout.  During his tenure as a Scout he served as the Troop’s Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and Chaplain’s Aid.  He earned the Jimmy Stewart Good Citizenship Award as well as the National Outdoor Awards for Aquatics, Hiking, Camping, Riding, and Conservation.  He earned both of Scouting’s highest STEM awards – the Bernard Harris and Thomas Edison awards.  He was elected to the Order of the Arrow and earned 69 Merit Badges including 3 silver, 3 bronze and 3 gold palm awards as well as the Complete Angler Award. He is a Leave No Trace Trainer and is National Youth Leadership trained.  He crossed the bridge from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts the same month that his Mom was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.
