I HAVE A QUESTION, WHAT ARE THE SURVIVAL CHANCES OF THESE FRY WHEN CONSIDERING THE CURRENT WATER TEMPERATURE AND TIME OF YEAR FOR RELEASE?
Mike – sounds like a familiar comment 🙂 I think we had this discussion a couple of years back. The time of year is good. Water temps are still relatively low and as long as we continue to get good flow rates from the dam through the summer then there are plenty of deep enough holes for them to hide out in. it is the exact same concern as the hold over adult trout. Dont forget that this is the time of year when they would be this size in the river if they had actually spawned and hatched there anyway as browns are fall spawners and rainbows are early spring. Each year TU puts eggs in the river in special hatchery boxes. They get their eggs at the exact same time as we get ours which means there are fry in the river right now the same size as ours from those boxes. When we can get eggs depends upon the fish hatcheries. That said we are going to look at getting our eggs a month earlier this next time round to try and improve the egg hatch rate. Short answer – chances are as good as any for a trout in south texas.

I am a homeschool consultant currently helping a Texas mom of a male teen to build a more hands-on curriculum. Can you please tell me if the Trout in the Classroom program applies to homeschoolers? I think this would make an amazing project for this young man.

Thanks for the interest in TITC. I am not entirely sure how suitable the project would be for home schooling considering the layout of equipment and the cost (from about $700 up per set up). If the parent and child have existing knowledge of taking care of freshwater fish and aquarium maintenance then it would be possible. I suggest speaking directly to Trout Unlimited and seeing if they have knowledge of the program being used for home schooled kids. There are hundreds of tanks across the US so chances are they have already addressed this.
