• If inexperienced, then buddy up.

Several of us will be staying at Maricopa Lodge in Sattler. Another choice is Rio Guadalupe and their cabins. Both sites have riverfront access.
Remember, most of the land along the river is privately owned. The best way to get access is through GRTU and their less access program.
We will likely meet up for dinner at Lucky’s Friday night and Gennaro’s on Saturday night.

I suggest monitoring the current flooding. I will see how much damage is being done and assess the outing accordingly.
It doesn’t look good for stocking before the scheduled date of the outing. I’m thinking about postponing it until mid Dec. Thoughts?
The outing has been postponed. To be rescheduled 12/5 or more likely 12/19. We need a new leader as I cannot attend those days. Contact Puck or me if interested. If we don’t get a leader, we won’t have an outing.

I have been asked to drop you all a short note about GRTU’s stockings this year.
When I first got involved with the managing GRTU stocking program it was assisting the previous VP of Fisheries Bill Higdon. Many of you remember Bill as a fishing enthusiast, guide, the President and VP of fisheries for GRTU, Harley rider, and generally a good fellow. Bill was always quick with a good joke and never ran out of Crown Royal. I will never forget Bill’s big ol’ belly laugh and light hearted mantra shouted out to fellow guides and Trout Bum’s like myself, “Get a real Job!” He was a character!
Normally we would have our first stockings around Thanksgiving weekend and some years even the first week of December. It was the traditional time as most years the water released from the lake and river were well into 60’s. When I took charge, one of the things I did was to try and move the first stocking up to an earlier date so our Trout starved anglers could get on the river as early as possible. My goal was to try and stock the river as early as conditions would allow. So I studied historical records of temperature monitors, talked to our experts and TPWD biologists, to determine when would be the earliest we could stock with 99% certainty everything would be fine. Most years that is the second or third weekend in November. But first and foremost, as a conservationist, was my responsibility to do what was best for the Fishery.
This year I called Marvin around the 1st of August to set up GRTU’s first 2 stocking dates. The first date we settled on was Nov12th. I also told him about our spring floods and the fact that if lake and river temperatures didn’t fall fast enough we might have to postpone the first stocking.
I have been closely monitoring the water temps of the lake and the river. The most critical factor is the discharge temperatures. We would like to see those temperatures 60 degrees or colder this time of year. So far this fall those discharges have been 68-70 degrees and that is too warm to risk stocking our valuable Trout. I have talked to Marcos Dejesus (TPWD Biologist) and David Schroeder (past GRTU webmaster, director, and consultant). My goal was to tap their knowledge and have an idea when we will see temperatures drop to a safe level for stocking the Trout and then fishing for them. This is an unusual situation this season with the lake’s thermocline being wiped out in the spring floods. The last time this happened was 2002. I was not involved in the stocking program back then and no one I’ve talked to remembers when the lake and the discharges cooled down that following fall and when we stocked.
I have weighed the conditions and determined right now it’s too risky to stock on the 12th. So I called Crystal lake Fisheries to postpone the first stocking. I did this now because when the Hatchery is getting ready to send us our Trout they must stop feeding the Trout for about 6 or 7 days before they are shipped. This is to decrease the amount of waste the Trout produce during the trip to eliminate as much as possible Trout mortality. And let me tell you has worked great so far! We usually see only a handful of dead Trout out of each delivery averaging about 2000-3000 Trout which is outstanding.
I have talked with the Hatchery about and the next available date. That date will put the fish in the river around Thanksgiving. After that, the next available open date was in December, and this was the best they could do for us. Now I will continue to monitor river conditions leading up to the first stocking. I do believe that this date will work out. But if temperatures still do not fall into a range that will be safe, I will do what is best for the Fishery, and postpone again (but I hope not). I hope this meets with your approval and clarifies the process we go through every year to provide you with the best possible Trout Fishery on the Guadalupe.
