Guadalupe One Fly - January 18th, 2014
« on: November 03, 2013, 09:35:00 AM »
Texas FlyFishers of Houston
Event: Guadalupe One Fly

When:      Saturday, January 18th, 2014
Where:     Guadalupe River, Rio Raft in Sattler. We will meet here and then spread out to fish
Start   08:00 in the Rio Raft Parking Lot
End Time:     When ever everyone is done – probably around 4pm
Trip Leader: Matt Blyth
Phone:    832 444 4206
e-mail:     carpman_1@yahoo.com

Trip Description: Catch as many inches of fish on the same fly. Measure and photograph for proof.  We will meet up afterwards to eat, drink and announce the winner. Hopefully we will meet at the fly shop in Sattler as Brent & Ashley have a keg in the shop!

How to sign up: Sign Up Here, on the sign up sheet distributed at the monthly meeting or e-mail the trip leader.
How to get waiver forms: Download PDF form here. Required  Waiver of Liability, filled out and signed, along with emergency contact information.

Cost:  Rio Raft access fee, plus personal expenses and transportation

Directions:  Rio Raft is located at the 4th crossing bridge on River Road. The easiest way to reach it is from exit 191 on I-35. Go North on FM 306 for 13 miles then turn left on 2673.  Go 1 ½ miles and turn left on River Road. Rio Raft is one mile down on the left. If you cross the river you went too far.

Important items:
•    Member dues are current!
•   Waiver of Liability, filled out and signed, along with emergency contact information
•   Current Texas Fishing License
•   Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited Lease Access Pass (not essential but it will help you reach areas the others can’t)
•   Waders with safety belt
•   Wading staff
•   Extra change of dry clothes
•   Wind and/or water proof jacket
•   Wide brimmed hat AND polarized glasses

Recommended Equipment:  Standard trout fishing gear will work fine here.  Rods should be in the 4-5wt range and whatever length you feel comfortable with, although as the predominant method is nymphing longer rods are better.  Tippets in the 5x range should be fine; I don’t think you need to go any lower unless you find the fish are really spooky.  Fluorocarbon is not essential, but I am sure it can’t hurt if you want to use it.  Standard 9ft leaders, split shot, indicators (if you want to use them), forceps, landing net, tape measure and camera.

Waders are essential to fish this river as most of the banks are private. A kayak can really expand the area you can fish.

Recommended Flies: Nymphing/streamers are the best bet as dry fly hatches on this river tend to be sporadic and this is a competition after all.  These are mainly hatchery raised fish that have been in the river only a couple of months so flies do not need to be complicated.  Last year egg patterns, san juan worms and basic nymphs such as hare’s ears, copper johns and pheasant tails all worked.  Sizes from 18-14 should be about right.  If you want to use streamers then woolly buggers (white or black) seem to work well.  Choose one fly, tie it on well and go for it!  If you get up to the river the day before you could stop at The Fly Shop and ask what is working on the river at the moment.

Recommended guidelines for participants:
•   Notify the trip leader if you have any potential concerns
•   If inexperienced, then buddy up.
•   If you are boating or kayaking, inform the trip leader of your float plan if planning to fish alone or longer then the designated times.
•   Sign in and sign out at the launch site. Inform the trip leader if you will be launching in a different place.
•   Be careful wading! There are some nasty slots in the river bed that can catch you unawares if you do not pay attention

Topic unlocked (really unlocked this time!) and ready for comments.

Please let me know how many folks are interested in accomodation on the river again. I will be calling Rio shortly to reserve a cabin.

Cheers
Matt

Yep - Sign me up for Rio Raft accommodations! And lets count beds this year... as well as how many the cabin can accommodate.

And since this is typically  nymphing, I think a double drop should be allowed as a "one fly." Who agrees or disagrees?  Stirring...  ;)

Is that a strike indicator or a bobber?

Folks

We have one cabin at Rio secured and the option on a second. Before I pay for the second to hold it I want to see if we can get more than 8 people signed up.

BE WARNED - ALL THE CABINS ARE DOUBLE BEDS! This means we will have 4 beds, one couch and space for three air mattresses up to a maximum occupancy of 8 people (or you can get very friendly with a fellow club member between now and the 18th Jan).

So far we have the following for Rio

1) Denis Auger - Friday & Saturday
2) Scott Breedlove - Friday & Saturday
3) George Sutherland - Friday & Saturday
4) Mike Quigley - Friday & Saturday

Anyone else?

Matt

Matt,

When I was there in November, I asked them to hold the two large cabins for us. They s/b under your or my name. BTW, I could use a place to stay as well.

If we don't have room at Rio, Maricopa Lodge around the corner will give us a deal (10% off) as well. They seem like decent folks and are on the river.

Mike

Yes they told me the two cabins were on hold. However last year we didnt really get more than one cabin full so I took the risk of releasing the other one and getting it back if we need it. To secure both would have meant paying in full for both cabins for the two days.

Cheers

Gotcha,

Good thinking.

I would like to reserve a spot, if I may.

Thanks

Yo! Count me in. And please save me a spot on the floor of the cabin where I can throw my sleeping bag. Deal?

Also, the cost for the Rio Raft access fee-- is this per vehicle, or angler? And how much? About ~$10 or so?
