February 2013 Freshwater Outing to the Mountain Forks River, OK

<< < (2/2)

Jim in Houston:
Below is an extensive list of accommodations in the Broken Bow / Beaver Bend State Park area, including the nearby community of Idabell.  There are two places that I can recommend for the three nights from February 14 with checkout on the 17th (unless you plan to arrive earlier or stay later):

* Charles Wesley Motor Lodge - http://www.charleswesleymotorlodge.com/ - this is very basic motel type accommodations.  The manager, Jay Patel, is offering our club members the following daily rates: one person in a room - $39 + tax; Two persons in room/two beds - $49 + tax.   Call to get these rates.  The Charles Wesley has been popular with TFF members in the past.  It is seven miles from the entrance to Beaver Bend and the Three Rivers Fly Shop.  I have stayed here on two occassions.
* Hochatown Country Lodge - http://www.hochatownlodge.com/.  This is much nicer than the Charles Wesley and is located at the entrance to the park and across from the fly shop.  They have a special rate of $69 per night (room with two queen beds plus breakfast) for fly fishermen fishing with our guide, Rob Woodruff.  Mention that you are fishing with Rob to get this rate.
Here is the complete list:

kzin:
How cold do you think it will be at this time of year?

Bear:
Cold enough that waders will be needed.

CarpMan:
Hmmmm - just realized that this would involve leaving Houston on Valentines Day. Everyone better start working on the kitchen pass

Jim in Houston:
Getting ready for the Febuary Outing - here is some info.

1)  It may be cold - hopefully no snow on the ground, but you will need to plan on an insulated layer under your waders and something warm on top.

2) Here are some of the recommended flies (thanks to Rob Woodruff and Dave Steffek for thes tips).  Start tying now or look around at the local fly shops.  Also check the Three Rivers Fly Shop in Broken Bow for the latest news - http://www.threeriversflyshop.com/.  The fly shop will probably be our meeting place on Friday morning, and will be open on Saturday, but they will not be open on Sunday or Monday, if you extend your fishing time and need more flies.

The following are good bets in sizes 14 – 18 (smaller will probably be more useful):

-   Bead-head Pheasant Tail
-   Gold-ribbed Hare’s Ear
-   Sowbugs (tan)
-   Zebra Midges in silver on black, red on black, with a black or silver bead
-   March Brown dry and emerger
-   Blue Wing Olive emerger and comparaduns
-   Spillway Creek Caddis Nymphs in dark olive
-   Copper John
-   San Juan Worm

I will be putting out additional information to participants by email later.
