Go to the texas kayak fisherman web page and click on fly fishing & tying forum there is a question on favorate flys for the Guad. Rony Mac fishes it regulary and list his flies. Or got to the GRTU web page & they will help also. I would give you advice and may miss lead you, the folks on TKF page won't.
All I ask is give us a report of your trip

Sorry I missed your post on the 2nd or I would have offered this advise before you left! The latest GRTU stocking was 11/16 so the fish have had a chance to spread out a bit in the river. They stocked from 2nd crossing all the way to 306 so there are ample places to walk in and fish. If you are not a GRTU member, you can access the river at several of the larger campgrounds by paying a 'day use' fee (Lazy L&L, Rio Raft, maybe Lone Star Float House). I think you can also pay for access at Action Angler, the fly shop on River Road.
I have been a couple of times recently and nymphs seem to be my best producer. I fish a copper john on top and a flashback pheasant tail underneath. Most of the fish come on the trailer. Stick with smaller flies (#14 attractor; #18 or #22 trailer). Other patterns that have worked are an egg or san juan worm attractor and a midge imitation trailer. Lots of guys are fishing streamers, particularly wooly buggers but a) I think the fish are getting wise to streamers and b) I'm more comfortable fishing nymphs so I can't offer alot of advice on streamers.
If you are nymphing, fish the green water and focus on getting the weight right on your nymphs so they get down to the fish. If you aren't dragging bottom from time to time, you're not deep enough.

Sipes was right...I nymphed the bottom and caught a nice 17 inch trout...pictures will come soon. My brother-in-law and I attended Action Angler's beginning fly fundraiser and we had a blast. It was a cold one, but that was just a minor inconvenience once we got some hits...thanks for the help!

Thanks for the photo. Which is bigger the smile on your face or the fish? Nice fish. You should participate in the one fly club outing on the Gaud. January 16.

Chris,
The Texas Park and Wildlife has posted their 2009-2010 Trout Stocking Schedule. Every year, local Lakes and Ponds are stocked with Trout and this is an excellent chance to practice your skills on a local area.
Go to their web and down load Parks and schedules and fish them as you find time.
