Texas Flyfishers Of Houston
May 2009 Saltwater Outing

When:    Saturday and Sunday, May 30 – 31, 2009
Where:   Port O’Connor, Texas
Start Time:   Saturday at 3:00 pm
End Time:   Sunday at Noon
Trip Leader:   Scott Fossum
Phone:   281-782-1160
e-mail:    Scott.Fossum@akzonobel.com

Trip Description:
We will meet up at the Port O’Connor Fishing Center @ 3:00 pm, load the gear on our shuttle boats and head out to the Port O’Connor Jetties for a night of fishing for what ever bites. Then on Sunday, you can fish the shoreline of Matagorda Island down towards Decros Point. A boat is not required to participate in the outing, but some shuttle boats are needed to transport the boat less.  This is a poor place for kayaks due to the current in the jetty, so leave it at home.

Gear:  Bug spray and normal fishing stuff for redfish and trout. If someone has a light plant (generator + lights) bring it.

Important Note: Keep in mind that space on the boats will be limited, so pack and bring only what you think you will need.

How to sign up:     Sign up on line, on the sign up sheet distributed at the monthly meeting or e-mail the trip leader.

Note: Because of the logistics involved in putting this outing together, if you are planning on participating, we will need a firm commitment from you no later than 3:00 pm, Wednesday, May 27, 2009. If at that time interest in the outing is minimal, the outing may be cancelled.

Directions:  Port O’Connor is located at the end of Texas 185, appx 25 miles South of Port Lavaca (See Map). From Port Lavaca, take Texas 238 through town. About a mile or so out, 238 will turn to the right toward Seadrift. Go appx 1 mile and turn left on FM 1289. Follow until the road T’s into 185. Turn Left and follow 185 into Port O’Connor. Turn right on S 15th Street and go appx 3 blocks. The street will turn to the left, go about 50 yards to the Port O’Connor Fishing Center.

About the area:     We should arrive in time to wade the flats or the beach front before sunset. We will be fishing off the jetties, so be sure to bring some sturdy shoes with good non slip soles.

Important items:
•   Make sure your member dues are current!
•   Waiver of Liability, filled out and signed, along with emergency contact information
•   Mosquito Repellant
•   Extra change of dry clothes
•   Flashlight or battery powered lantern
•   Wind and/or water proof jacket
•   Wading Shoes and Sting Ray Guards
•   Mosquito Repellant
•   Food, water, snacks and a trash bag
•   Hat, Polarized Glasses
•   First Aid Kit
•   Sunscreen and Mosquito Repellant

Equipment:  8 wt outfit with floating line. If you have an intermediate line, you might want to bring that along also.

Flies:  Clouser deep minnows, Deceivers, Seaducers and shrimp patterns should be productive flies. Crab flies and kwan style patterns also work well, as will poppers and spoon flies. For some of the species that could show up in the night, it might be a good idea to bring along some 30# or 40# bite tippet and / or some #3 or #4 leader wire.

Recommended guidelines for participants:
•   Notify the trip leader if you have any potential concerns
•   If inexperienced, then buddy up.
•   Have proper safety equipment
•   If you are boating or kayaking, inform the trip leader of your float plan if planning to fish alone or longer then the designated times.
•   Sign in and sign out at the launch site. Inform the trip leader if you will be launching in a different place.
•   And, by all means, DON’T FORGET THE MOSQUITO REPELLANT!
