Outing Chat / Re: White Oak Lakes - HOT!
« on: May 29, 2012, 09:40:48 AM »
Matt,

Yes, they'll hit poppers. I got bored catching them on a woolly bugger and switch to a frog popper and had a blast. Mike & I hit it again yesterday morning, this time in our kickboat/kayaks. The bite wasn't quite as furious as the last time, but it was still pretty darn good!

The area is located right across from the store where we met up at for the St Pat's day outing, Holister & West Little York.

Let's put it this way; I caught so many fish on wooly buggers that I got bored and switched to a topwater frog pattern just to even things up a bit. They still went tearing after the fly! You definitely want your lightest rod as these fish weren't big, but they sure were fun!   ;D

BTW: Golden isn't exaggerating when he says 200 fish. We really did catch that many!

The War Department is going to a bridal shower in College Station, so I have a free Saturday.  Looking to hit it somewhere. Anyone interested?

Well, the turn out was more based on quality than quantity as there were only three of us. Eduardo, George & I started off fishing the south shoreline west of the launch. The conditions looked good, except for the wind. Unfortunately, someone forgot to inform the fish. We then decided to head into Churchill Bayou and Little Churchill Bayou.  The water was somewhat murky and despite our best efforts, we struck out. The wind may have been forecast at 10, but was easily 15+. This ensured our paddle back to the ramp from Churchill would be "entertaining".  Afterwards, George came up with the best suggestion of the day, which was lunch at Cafe Michael Burger just west of the seawall.

Thought we all got skunked, it was a beautiful day with good food & good friends. All in all, it was a success, IMHO.

OK y'all. The outing is this Saturday. It would be helpful if those who are going could check in on here. I'll be send out an email later this week to remind everyone as well. So far, the weather looks decent, but you know as well as I do, that this is subject to change!

Hope to see everyone out there!

Here is the email I just sent out:

Hey y'all,

The weather idiots are calling for winds around 20+ with gusts to near 30 mph from the North. It seems that we would all have a much better time if we shoot for another weekend. As the Sunfish Spectacular will be on the 28th, I'm going to go with Saturday, May 5th. This seems to be the best solution right now.

If some of you want to try and find a place this Saturday, let me know. I'm still game to fish, but I don't want to hold the outing and have it go bad for everyone.

Thanks!

Please post on here if you can still make it or if you can now make it with the new date.

We can either try someplace else, or reschedule for May 5th. What do y'all want to do?

The wind does not look very promising for Saturday. Windfinder http://www.windfinder.com/forecast/san_luis_island is pretty ugly. I am open to suggestions if it looks like this forecast is goning to hold. Shall we reschedule? Find a protected area? What would everyone like to do? I am out of town on business, but will be back Thursday. I will have some phone & email access, it just might take a little time to reply.

General Discussion / R.I.P. Jose Wejebe

Don't know how many of you are familiar with Jose Wejebe, host of "The Spanish Fly" on The Oudoor Channel, but sadly, it appears he died in a plane crash today:

He seemed like a decent fellow.

Vaya con Dios, Jose.
