Outing Information Only / Re: July Outing - Port O'Connor One-Fly
« on: July 20, 2015, 05:02:54 PM »
Next Time you want to go and pay $500.00 or more (tip) to a guide and catch nothing do me a favor Call Me. I'll at least bring a towel for the tears. Hooo Haaaa Haaaa! you kidding me you went to fish the jetties on PoCoLoCo weekend. HAHAHAHA who talked you into that? Hopefully most of the big boats were probably gone by the time you got out on the water. Their 6-8 foot high wakes are a little daunting if you know what I mean.

Can you imagine how the fish felt with 60 or so fifty foot long offshore marlin boats hauling arse out the jetties all night long in search of a million dollars. I believe they would be shell shocked (and and to use your term) locked-down on the very bottom. I did hear the crabs were plentiful out there.  Did you use a blue crab pattern? Did you chum?  Did you try conventional tackle? What kind of boat were you in...Brett's Skiff?  Most of the guides out there are going to 24' panga's to smooth the ride a bit. Any pictures of the conditions? But knowing you Puck, bet you guys had a great time! Sorry you can't make our Club's outing this week.

I plan on doing just that!  That is the rum and relaxing. Looking forward to both nights dinner. But you have a good point how many of the group show up for dinner on time. Oh well we can always use the leftovers for chum out at the jetties on Saturday.

As always if there any corrections need above. Let us know ASAP.
I would say were going to have one heck of an Outing.  Some of the finest flyfishers in the state all slugging it out down in POC for the Crystal Trophy. WOW

We have had a late surge of fishers who may not have previously arranged boats as we recommended some time ago.  We're all working hard at assuring boat transportation for all. Watch for status updates.

Got to be pretty tall to just reach up and grab a fly rod especially the one on top. Perfect for Puck!
I don't like leaving my fly rods out where someone can just grab and dash if you know what I mean.  But then again who'd look in the laundry room! ::)

I will be going down a little earlier in the week to make sure I have all of the right locations hot spotted.  When will you be able to get away?  Now here's the BIG questions...have you ever fished saltwater before? Have you ever poled a skiff before? Have you ever spotted a redfish cruising the flats before? If no is the answer to all of the above...you better bring plenty of booze!

Thanks Finn I saw two of them and this was the first time for me to see any in the bayou. Guess I could have used a net if I had one with me. With all of the mullet swimming around I'd rather get rid of them first. They are over-running the bayou.

Hope you can join us soon.

???? freshwater yawn... why not go to Sabine Lake...now that's fishing. Have fun hope they don't release from the spillway.  Oops you could end up in Orange real quick. HAHAHAHA

Outing Information Only / Re: White Oak Bayou (July 11th, 2015)
« on: July 11, 2015, 12:52:20 PM »
SWEET SWEET SWEET WE HAD AN OUTSTANDING OUTING! BIG THANKS TO THOSE THAT ATTENDED!

I rolled into the meeting spot at 7:45 am and there was Terry, Eduardo, Doug and Daren drinking their coffee and discussing their preferred fly for the day. As I rolled up several others pulled in, they were Howard, Paul, and Travis.  As we were discussing where to go we saw another truck or two drive by loaded with kayaks, honking their horns in approval that this was our day to have a a blast on the White Oak Bayou.

I got with the guys and asked where they wanted to go.  Those that had not been here before loaded into their vehicles and followed me to several hot spots along the bayou.  Once we got parked I said grab your rods and let's go. As soon as we walked over the ridge and looked into the bayou we knew this was going to be a good day. The water was clear and you could see fish cruising the shallows from fifty feet away.   Eduardo and Howard broke off to the right and Darin and I went left and it wasn't long till the first fish came to hand.

This guy hit my tiny clouser like a freight train. and I watch Darin as he went tight on a fish only to get the "See ya buddy" from his newly found...er lost friend!  A few minutes later I caught another really small perch but if he was game so was I. We fished this spot for about an hour.  Couple more were landed but the two of us thought we could do better somewhere else.  We met up with Eduardo and Howard who had caught a few too but nothing to write home about. As we walked back to our trucks we wondered how the others were doing.

Once in the truck with the AC blasting (remember it is summer) I drove to location X.  Swearing the guys to the secret hand shake and dismemberment it they told the location to any others, we headed down the bayou bank.  The water here was even more clear than up stream.  As I walked along the shore I looked at the edge of the water to see this.

What in the heck is this?  It just stayed there and stared at us. Looked pre-historic to me.  Any guesses?  It wasn't a fly eater for sure.  I actually touched the thing with a fly and it didn't move.  No it wasn't dead! but when it did move it wasn't in a hurry either.
I saw Terry latch onto a good bass to my left and could hear it thrashing in the water trying to escape ...not today! Nice fish!
Darin was getting to many refusals so I showed him what was working for me. He tied on his closest appearing fly and started to work the bank.  He is a new member but don't be fooled he can cast! I followed behind him so that he would get first shot at the fish but soon I was jerking a fish out of right where he was standing.

Some days it's roses and others it's thorns. I showed him my presentation over the rocks using a jigging motion and suddenly there is a flash on my fly.  I set the hook and all of a sudden flying through the air up on the bank behind me is a 2-1/2" long bass.  I cant ever remember catching this small of a bass.  But I did.  He took the picture so hopefully I get it posted soon.

We met back at the store around noon.  After getting our drinks, each guy told his story
and showed pictures of their fish.  By the way for the new guys if you email them to me I can get them posted here. We asked the guys who fished the ponds (Greg, Doug, Edgar, Travis, and Paul) how things went there? Travis noted the fishing was really off compared to his last time here when he caught a ship-load of bass.  The other guys did pretty good too.  While sitting on his tailgate, Travis broke out some IPA beer and as usual the stories got longer and more detailed. Ha what a group we got here.  As I said to everyone at the last meeting....guys It's here for the taking all you have to do is come on down!  Great day for all of us smiles were a plenty.

NEWEST INFORMATION AS OF 07/06/15
I went down to the bayou this past Saturday. The water is starting to clear up nicely and if no heavy rain between now and next Saturday we should be good. First place I tried I caught a 2 lb bass on second cast!  The grass along the banks has grown up about 16" high and requires you to throw a very high back cast so that you don't get caught up in the overgrowth.  With the grass growing the other problem is you MUST be aware there are snakes down there.  Make plenty of noise while moving into position and you'll be OK.  First place I went I saw one! So expect to see a few.  Not much different than watching out for sting rays while wade fishing.

We'll meet in the cul de sac at the end of Loren Lane.  From West Little York take Holister north go around left hand bend and take first right (Woodland Oaks Drive) go 100' and take first right (Shady Arbor Ln) and follow around to end of street.  Park in cul de sac (away from trash pile dropped there this past week) and we'll meet there at 7:30 to 8:00 am.  I'll drive you guys around to different locations so that you can each get a good spot or two.  For those wanting to fish the ponds bring a kayak and enjoy! Do Not Park down at the ponds please even if you see others doing so.

Call me if you have any problems getting there, my number is on the sign up sheet!
