Weather looks to be clearing up nicely for Friday & Saturday. A little blustery Saturday evening but only a 20% chance of rain on Friday & Saturday.

I do have a spare 12 wt sink tip. If Bob can get reel and backing he would be in business.

Joe

He's riding down with me so I'm sure we can figure it out. ;)

Bob: I have an Okuma Sierra 10/11wt that I don't use. It needs line & backing but you're welcome to use it. It would probably handle 12wt line in a pinch, just not with quite as much backing.

Puck- can you PM me your phone # so I can get in touch on Friday?

Bob & dunkingmidget- can you fellas do the same? I'll PM you my contact info shortly. I'm gonna try to make Tuesday's meeting before the trip but if I can't we can coordinate.

And to answer the questions, my truck bed is open without a cover. I'll have camping gear in big, Rubber-Maid bins. I'm also going to jerry-rig up a rod-rack for driving on the beach and if we need it on the drive down and we'll be good. If it's just 2 or 3 of us and we don't all try to bring the kitchen sink we can put some stuff in the bed and the back-seat too.

I think the earliest I can leave would be about 3 on Friday. That would hopefully put us down near the entrance of PINS around 6:30-7. If we've got a solid fix on where the others will be set up and the beach conditions aren't too dicey I'm pretty comfortable driving down the beach at night to meet up with everybody.

Looks like I have to back out on this one. My father asked me to help him with some stuff and it has to get done this weekend.

I was really looking forward to this trip. I may have to make a solo trip there in October.

Google maps says it's 2 hours 50 minutes from my house which means it's really 2:20-2:30. I think I'll enjoy my own bed and roll out between 4-4:30 Saturday AM. Forecast says 70% chance of rain on Friday and 40% on Saturday- hopefully that holds off some.

FYI- I plan on bringing one each of 6, 8, 10, and 12wt rigs.

I figure the 6 will be good if we get into ladyfish. The 8 is more likely a back-up. And the 10 & 12 will target jacks & tarpon (Lord willing). I'll also have a couple conventional combos in case the wind is bad. Definitely going to be loaded for bear.

General Discussion / Looking for a vintage fiberglass 10wt(or higher) rod
« on: September 11, 2013, 11:51:28 AM »
So I've just inherited a beautiful, never used Fin-Nor Tycoon #3 Anti-reverse fly reel. This is vintage 1971'ish and I'm really thinking of using it in FW for striper and in the salt as a boat rod for jacks, bonita, tarpon, etc. But I want to keep in the vintage feel and go with either a vintage graphite rod or preferably a late-60s to early-70s fiberglass rod. I've found a fair number on-line but all of them are in the lower weight classifications and this is a big game reel.

Here's some pics:

Finn,

I'm on board as well. Looking forward to the trip?

Depends on whether or not you're good company for the drive.  ;)

If I were to camp out, what's the closest camp ground?

So re-reading the gameplan as outlined by Puck I'm unsure as to when most people are planning on heading down.

Is the plan to get down there Friday evening or roll out of Houston early Saturday and just fish Saturday afternoon/Sunday morning?

I can't leave early on Friday due to Monday the 30th being the end of the quarter for me but if most people are heading down Saturday I'd be willing to roll out of Houston late at night and be able to hit the beach early Saturday morning.

Like I said, I'm flexible on time but only camping one night means I can travel lighter.

I live in Summerwood off Lake Houston.

I figure on leaving mid-afternoon on Friday but that's flexible somewhat.

As for gear, I have an open/uncovered bed. I don't plan on bringing a tremendous amount of gear though. As long as nobody brings everything & the kitchen sink I can easily handle myself, 2 riders, and gear.

How practical are kayaks here? Or is better to rock-hop?
