Tying Chat / Seeking some crack
« on: March 11, 2014, 04:11:29 PM »
So I've yet to become addicted to tying flies and as such need a source for my crack.

Redfish crack that is. If somebody will tie me up a dozen or so, say half with lead eyes and half with bead-chain eyes I'd pay $5 apiece if I can get them before the Xmas Bay outing.

Gracias.

Outing Chat / Christmas Bay 3/29 - redfish crack flies wanted/needed
« on: March 11, 2014, 11:57:03 AM »
So with the Xmas Bay trip coming up and me not really a tyer of flies yet I was hoping to prevail upon the folks who do tie to tie me up a mess of redfish crack- some with lead eyes and some with bead-chain.

I will happily pay a fair price for a dozen or so.

General Discussion / My Grand Isle report
« on: February 18, 2014, 09:41:16 AM »
My fishing partner and I rolled up to the house in Grand Isle just as Joe & his buddy were packing up to leave. Sounds like both parties had excellent trips.

Here's a bit of our report and some of the photos:
Spent 2 days sight-casting the south Louisiana marsh for bull reds on the fly w/ Capt. Scott Null. Scott normally fishes West Bay down to POC but rented a house in Grand Isle for January & February and was booking trips over there after catching reds there up to 40# last winter. None of the fish caught hit that mark but all 8 of the reds I caught in 2 days would have been personal bests for me on the fly.

I landed 8 reds with the smallest being 29" and 9# and the largest 39" and 24#. 5 of my reds went over 20#. I also caught a 5# black drum and a nice sized sheepshead (my first on the fly). My fishing partner caught 5 reds with his largest going 42" & 25# and his smallest going about 14#. He also caught about a 15# drum and a 7-8# sheepshead.

All the fish were sight-cast in skinny water and caught on a fly developed by Andy Packmore at FTU called "redfish crack."

Here's my 39"- and even cooler (at least to me) was catching it on a vintage Fin-Nor reel and vintage fiberglass Fenwick rod:

Definitely going back next winter.

General Discussion / Casting pointers
« on: February 03, 2014, 02:07:29 PM »
So I got to fish the Everglades back country 1/22-1/23 unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate so I have no pics of tarpon or snook and the reds & jacks I did catch weren't picture worthy.

Anyway, after the trip the guide emailed me and mentioned this:

Quote
I watched your casting all day and I have a few pointers. You are a powerful man, don’t over load the rod (it sets off oscillations in the rod a wiggle) it un-loads instead of loads, on the back cast stop the rod completely and let the line un-furl. Sometimes the leader/fly hooked to the left, that happens when the rod is not brought back and forward in a straight line (oval shape).

As I'm a self-taught caster anybody have any rec's for where to get some pointers on drills or things I can do to address these hitches in my casting stroke?

Outing Information Only / Louisiana trip w/ Scott Null- anybody interested?
« on: November 11, 2013, 03:50:37 PM »
So a colleague of mine and I fished with Scott Null on Friday 11/8 in the Galveston area (I'll post a separate report- it was a tough day though but we weren't skunked) and he let me know that in January & February he's got it lined up so that he'll be guiding out of Grand Isle and over to Port Fourchon where you can get shots at some big ol' bull reds.

Here's what he told me:
Quote
I will offer full day trips only at $650 for one or two anglers.  That includes fishing and lodging.  It will be $600 per day if booking two or more consecutive days.  I'll have to clean up and wash sheets, etc between parties so I figure if I can get folks to stay a couple days or more it'll make my life easier.  Plan to arrive the evening before the trip and depart following the trip unless I happen to have an open date the day after your trip in which case you are welcome to stay over and leave the following day.  Also, there are a few hotels in the area if needed and at that time of year they should have plenty of vacancy.

I'm just starting to book dates so it is fairly open at this point.

Anybody down for a couple days on the water in January/February?

General Discussion / Looking for a vintage fiberglass 10wt(or higher) rod
« on: September 11, 2013, 11:51:28 AM »
So I've just inherited a beautiful, never used Fin-Nor Tycoon #3 Anti-reverse fly reel. This is vintage 1971'ish and I'm really thinking of using it in FW for striper and in the salt as a boat rod for jacks, bonita, tarpon, etc. But I want to keep in the vintage feel and go with either a vintage graphite rod or preferably a late-60s to early-70s fiberglass rod. I've found a fair number on-line but all of them are in the lower weight classifications and this is a big game reel.

Here's some pics:

Outing Chat / Matagorda trip this weekend- flyfishers come on out
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:07:54 AM »
So I'm sort of the ringleader for a handful of guys and we're hitting Matagorda this weekend. We'll be camping at 3 Mile Cut and fishing the surf or bay depending on conditions & our mood. I'm headed out after lunch from Houston and will be staking our claim.

I know some of y'all will be in Llano but I started planning this before I joined TFF.

Silver Nissan Titan with a yellow OK Drifter. Come on out if you're in the neighborhood and have a beer.

Cheers,
Finn
