Tying Chat / Fly Tying Light
« on: September 08, 2013, 12:49:46 PM »
Need your help.  I need to get some sort of light to use while tying.  Thought I would ask the great group we have.

What are your favorites lights and why?

Please note: I am not asking miller, bud or coors light.  I am doing my own research there.

Look forward to your responses.

Take a shot with my 10wt Helios. It is light as a feather and is not much effort to cast. Not slow but it easy to cast.

Outing Chat / Re: East Matty Trip

They replaced the drawbridge and ratty baitshop with an overpass over the ICW and some fancy homes. It is a great view of the bay from the top of the bridge.

I'm kind of confused about the comment "while my kids are little". I assume you mean the 13 yr old and not the ones that are 23, 19 and 17. I am hoping to get them out of school so a boat becomes a possibility.

Outing Chat / East Matty Trip
« on: August 30, 2013, 06:00:20 PM »
Took a solo kayak trip to East Matagorda this morning. First time I've been down to the west end since they took out the draw bridge. Also had to find a new launch. Got a work out on the paddle to the south shoreline. Lots of bait moving but the water was muddy.

Manged a dink red on a nice shrimp fly that I got from Frank B at the expo. Caught on street legal trout on a Borski craft fur shrimp that I tied.

Figured out that I need a GPS. Tried to leave through the wrong cove. Luckily I saved a few point along the way as contacts in my phone.

Off the water before the rain started. Good day but I need to find  better entry/exit to east Matty.

Ending the day listening to Steely Dan play at the woodlands.

Talked to Golden. Looks like we will be leaving the "Lil Cujo" at home.  Would have to change its name to CB (Coyote Bait) if he went to PINS with us.

Alright Golden, time to post the rules.  They seemed to be pretty fluid when we talked on Saturday.  Need to get them on the able before tehy are 100% in your favor.

Alex, can you post info on the address for the condo's?

General Discussion / Re: Fly boxes?
« on: July 14, 2013, 03:00:51 PM »
Cliff's - the slotted foam is great.  The Beast and Beast Jr are do a good job holding your "beach sized" flies and not squishing them flat. Cliff's also has a large waterproof box (the Justin Case).

I have never seen "Bug Luggage" before. They look great for small stuff.  BugLug website makes it sound like their larger boxes are not that tall.  I suspect they would cause problems with your PINS flies.

I would buy a box of each brand and figure out what works for you.  You can give me whichever one you don't want.

Outing Chat / Re: Bayou carp

Mark Marmon was guiding the local bayous in search of braes bonefish (carp).  He has also talked to the club a couple of times about it and other urban angling adventures.  One of the flies he had was a coffee bean glued to a small hook.  Looked like an overgrown lady bug.  Always thought that would be fun to do and have not gotten around to it.

Call Mark up and talk to him about it.  Here is his website: http://www.metroanglers.com/

Sign me up for lodging.

I got there at halftime (lunch).  Things seemed to be slow.  Great BBQ and discussions.  One discussion was around what happens when you put a rod on a car and drive off.  I ended that conversation saying "I haven't done that yet."   You can probably see where this is going.

Spent the afternoon being teased by bass examining whatever fly I threw out there and then moving away.  Finally tricked one bluegill into hitting the fly.

Heard a lot of Puck's "Fish on!"  Asked him what the secret was and tried it out.  Third cast I got a hit and broke off.  As a final salute the fish jumped clear out of the water taking my fly with him.

Headed on home and unpacked then a good dinner with my oldest son who was home for the weekend.

This morning the kids and I were headed out for church and noticed that someone left a nice fly rod in front of my house in the  cul-de-sac.  I then remembered putting it on top of my son's car while I was unloading my car.  Later that night, he drove off not noticing it was there.  When he came home (whatever time that was) he pulled past the driveway and backed in, probably running it over.

The rod looked a little scuffed up but none the worse for wear.  Only took a few casts for it to fall apart.

Now I get to try out the TFO warranty.

There are probably lots of "morals to this story".  For instance, if you haven't left a rod on top of your car and driven off, don't talk about it or it might happen to you that same day!!!  Another one is if you see a fly rod in the road in front of your house and wonder what idiot put it there, it was probably you.  I am sure there are more.

Still had fun, caught a fish and enjoyed talking to some good friends. Always good to get out.

Oh yeah, another good moral to the story is TFO's $25 no fault warranty is a winner.
