General Discussion / Re: Marine VHF Radio Recommendations
« on: August 08, 2012, 02:06:59 PM »
I use an Icom, and they are pretty nice and not really all that expensive. I also use mine as a backup to the fixed-mount in my boat. They all work reasonably well, I don't think that there is a lot of difference for a casual weekend kayaker. What I would look for are the features you want. When I was shopping I was interested in:
  • Power - equates to range and clarity
  • Floating
  • waterproof
I'd think you could get something pretty nice for $125 to $150. Try taking a look at West Marine; I found mine on sale at a pretty good price, I just don't remember what that was. And yeah... I keep mine in a drybag too.

Hope that helps?

Came across the presentation on fly fishing the beach, entitled "Spex on the beach" (clever turn of phrase, right?) that was used for the meeting. Go to www.goflies.com and you'll see the deck with several others on the lower left-hand side. I agree... there was some very useful information presented, and in an interesting way.

Here's the link: http://www.goflies.com/presentations/Spex%20on%20the%20Beach.pdf

May be giving this a try soon... I appreciated the tips on road acess to Bolivar.

Don't know the address, but try a google on "Pequod House Port O'Connor" and you'll see a map. The only directions are: "The Pequod House is located on Carrie Street just off of Harrison by way of Byers from Adams in Port O'Connor "

Should be a house trailer with a few pickup trucks parked in front, a few 8 wts leaning against the wall, and a few empty beer cans rolling around on the deck. Also identified by the audible din inside; that will be Quigley's snoring and any other noises from a bunch of guys.  :P

Drive safely and we'll leave the light on for you!

By the way... Here's what Matt looks like when he is being spooled by a fish. I love his expression - frustration! Note the angle of that rod - pointing straight out while that fish was heading to Cuba!

Even though the winds were blowing over 25mph we switched to spinning gear and still had a great time. Regrettably, a work conflict will prevent me from joining the group in PINS this year... argh!

Sorry guys, I can't make the rescheduled date either. Painful. Too many many work-related and family-related responibilities. As dysfuntional as I am trying to be I can't seem to shake them.

Argh...  :'(

I hope everyone has a great and safe time! Looking forward to the photos and writeup, this summer's installment of the next volume of War and Peace.

General Discussion / Re: Port Mansfield 5-4 & 5-6, 2012

Pt Mansfield is one of my favorite places to fish; the LLM is absolutely beautiful. Try not to tell many people about it, there are to many magazine articles already and I've seen fishing pressure increase exponentially in the past ten years.

As important as the fishing... did you make to El Jefe's?  ;)

Glad you had a good trip!

Sorry guys - I'm not able to make this one. Seems I have a daughter's high school graduation and associated festivities around that weekend.

Argh... I was really looking forward to this one. Maybe next year!  :(

Fishing Tackle Unlimited / Re: FTU I-10 Store Opening

Stopped by the new store today to pick up a few leaders and WOW! What a nice store. Fly shop and Simms selection right up front and expanded. Really nicestore; they have done a great job. Sounds like they're planning some nice grand opening specials - I'm guessing there is something in there to spend some money on.

BUT... I will miss the FTU/ Carters Country/ Goode Company trifecta. Park once and hit three of my favorites!

General Discussion / Check out Texas Saltwater Fishing magazine

Hey TFF'rs...
Check out the photo gallery of the May edition of "Texas Saltwater Fishing" magazine! The gallery (page 103) features a photo of my daughter Clare and a really nice cobia she caught last summer. A really great fish for her, and it wore her out. Awesome.

Too bad we couldn't Photoshop the homely guy on the left out of the picture, somebody had to help her hold that fish!

Making memories with your kids...what a great life!

Kayak fishing on Cinco de Mayo! Muy Bueno! Muco tecate gusto...

Trying to fish into a 25 knot headwind  - Sea realmente malo!

Just my $.02... Live to fish another day, and like Golden suggests - a comfy chair and a good book.

I am signed up and ready! I'm hoping this balmy weather continues... will be fun, and I'm sure there is a local venue for a shrimp po-boy and a cold beer after the adventure.  8)

A sad day - I enjoyed his program for years, and you could always learn something from his shows. He had a real respect for the marine environment and conservation, and that really came through in his work.

You're right, Mike - Vaya con Dios...

Mike's been throwing some gaudy green and orange thing with a cone head. I'm planning to bring a few woolly buggers, (black with some flash), some crawfish looking' things (orange), a few streamers and poppers. Just want to be able to cover the water column, with the rains there may be some depth. Bead heads might be useful, as Golden has been drawing strikes by bouncing along the many rocks. I'm sure he'd tell you that if he could salvage his computer.

Actually I'm just going to bring a bunch of stuff and keep throwing.

Also a cooler of beer...must stay hydrated.
