TFF was a success at this because of our volunteers:
Golden
Tony L.
Jim H.
Marcos E.
John P.

More details to post later.

We've been invited back in 2 weeks for fly tying.

Lessons learned:
1.   Make a driving plan and stick to it:
a.“We’ll drive to MM 20 and start looking for a place to fish”
b.“We’ll fish at each stop for 15 minutes, and if the fishing is only so-so, we’ll move on”
                    c. One vehicle takes the lead, and he has the “scout.”  The rest follow his lead.  Portable 2-way radios could come in useful here.
2.   Make sure that every vehicle knows who has what recovery equipment, and where it is.  Who has the chains, jacks, buckets, shovel, etc?
3.   Bring seat covers.  Folks will be getting in and out with sand and saltwater on them.
4.   Be prepared for the wind:
              a.  Back-up spinning or casting rods with lures.
              b. Sand anchors for the tents.
              c. A way to block the wind for cooking
5.   Bring a back-up fly rod.  The saltwater can play havoc on reels, and can do some damage to rods.
6.   Have a way to make the rods easily accessible.  A roof rack or other style of rod quick release holder is extremely important.  You may have to jump out and start fishing within seconds of seeing the fish, or the bait.

We have 17 people signed up as of 2013-04-10-1130.

We typically have 40+ show up for this event.

Don't be bashful, sign up early.  Let's get a good count.  I would hate to have to feed folks hotdogs instead of brisket.

With you, Jim, and I, that will be 3.

3 for a class of 20 will be stretching it.

I think we need at least 2 more.

If we can't get 5 by Wednesday, I think we should pull out.

I have the link to all the trip's pictures.

Send me a PM and I'll share.

This should keep the "lurkers" from knowing where are the "good" spots are... :)

Get signed up soon.

Those that are not signed up by Sunday, 2013-04-14, will not get a free box of Mike's killer flies.

On a side note, an accurate count will help us determine how much food to cook.

Tying Chat / Mardi Gras Minnow
« on: March 31, 2013, 04:12:15 PM »
I started tying this fly as an imitation of Casey Smart's minnow.  Casey Smart's minnow

As you can see, my results didn't come out anywhere near as elegant as Casey.  But for some reason the fish seemed to like my disaster well enough.

Here is how I do it:

Tye in the Mardi Gras Beads, about 1/2 way up the hook shank.

Tie in the First layer of fur at the rear.

Tie in some Shiney stuff on top of the first layer of craft fur

Tie in a Second layer of craft fur over shiney stuff

Make a dubbing loop for craft fur

Palmer the dubbing loop all the way up to the eye of the hook.

Tie off , cut and glue.  I use CA, but others use Fabric Fusion.

Use a Metalic marker to get a layered look.

Finished, take it fishing

Midshank wire wrap with fingernail polish overlay.

Tie a few with specific number of wraps, and see what works best for what you need.  The difficult part is keeping records, so what I do is associate thread color with number of wraps.

Good luck.
