Outing Chat / Quick trip to Sabine River....
« on: February 21, 2015, 06:19:32 PM »
The fishing was great.  The catching could have been better.

3 of us were on the river, in the rain, at sunrise, flinging flies from kayaks.

Some pictures....

I've replaced one of my 5wt lines, and this is the old one.  It has a few nicks, but still casts, and floats.  It would be perfect for a beginner or a training rod.

I'll bring it with me to the next TFF meeting 2015-02-24.

5 anglers signed up so far.

March 7th is still the target date.

You'll need to bring camping gear, and warm clothes for the night.

We may be able to have a small campfire.  I'll check with the land owner.  I plan to bring a small stove.  Hotdogs and hamburgers for dinner, and instant oatmeal for breakfast are my plans.  We'll coordinate better about the food when the date gets closer.

We also will need to watch the weather very close.

Lets see the bottom

Fish won't see it, and neither will you..     8)

Kidding aside, I'll bring some to the meeting next week.

We are signed up and in contact with Bridgeland.

A few more volunteers will allow us to walk around and socialize.

So far we have 3.

John P.

Let me know if you can help out.

5 of us were there to show the students how to tie that fly:
Don H.
John P.
Marcos E
Joe C

The video was a great help, and the after actions review by the crew gave us some ideas for next year.

The kids loved it and we were asked to come back.

Let's get these kids on the water!

When can we expect a fly-tying video?

Soon!    8)

The secret river...

Dean reminded me about how effective this simple fly truly is.  I have always tied them, and recommended them to others, but have never personally fished them.  That changed yesterday.

I'm sure you can supply the name once you see them>

Here are a few that Nilo and I tied today.

Nilo and I were experimenting with what we have on hand.

Here are the results:

5 signed up but only Dean and I went.

We left Katy at 0300 and were parked at the boat launch at 0550, after passing the sign in the fog.

As we were putting the final rigging on the kayak and ready to take the first one to the water 3 trucks showed up all at once out of the fog.  We lost our spot in line for a moment, and then realized that we were small enough to squeeze by the larger boats in this one lane launch.

Boat boats in the water and lights on at 0615.   Since this was Dean's first time out in his kayak, he did a little more adjusting once he was on the water, as I went ahead to the fishing spot given to me by W. Ross, another retired Vet.  First white bass hit at the deep hole about 1/2 mile from the spawning beds.

Fishing was fast and furious, with fish running into our legs until about an hour after sunrise,  Then it slowed down, and most folks called it quits.  Dean and I moved up-river for another mile or so, exploring.  Only a few more fish were caught upriver, to include a small crappie.

We easily caught 60+ fish during the trip, and harvesting only 20.

The what bass run is almost over in this spot for the year.  Of the 20 for the table there was only one female.

I have the GPS coordinates locked for next year.
