Tying Chat / Chartreuse eyes
« on: July 31, 2015, 04:37:27 AM »
From Russell C.

I saw your video on swamp monster.  Chartreuse eyes are hard to find.  I make mine by spraying bead chain in the back yard.  I hang the beads from a coat hanger that is hanging on a tree limb.  I spray them with this Krylon (R) spray paint.  I get the Krylon (R) from Hobby Lobby (R) or Walmart (R).  The color for chartreuse is "Ivy Leaf Gloss".  I hang the beads from a coat hanger at one end with a twisty tie.  Then what I do is spray them.  It takes only 10 minutes to dry.  Once dried I go back and look to see if it needs respraying.  Again I wait 10 minutes, and if all looks good then I put the clear acrylic on it.  The clear acrylic coats the paint and the paint won't come off.  I will send you a picture of this.  After 10 minutes it will be dry as well.  The beads in the picture were originally black and I painted them a couple of times and they came out good.

Friends,

As it was pointed out last night, the 22nd of August is a conflict with our mini-expo, and the date for this outing is now changed to the 29th.

This means that we wait for a week before hitting the flats, but it also means that we can participate in the mini-expo.

Tents that we bring, and Friday night for sure.

We can ask skip about Saturday if we need to at the meeting tonight.

1.   Time to arrive,
      a.   Before dark Friday night, to be able to set up camp
2.   Wading, bank, kayak, types and
      a.   I plan to take a kayak, but you need to be aware that the “boat launch” is pretty hairy. See the picture
      b.   You can wade in many spots, but expect to get wet. The rocks are slimy.
      c.   Kickboats work well, but they limit amount of water you can cover, and if they generators start, you’ll be in a panic for the shoreline.
      d.   Banks are high, and fly-fishing from shore is a real challenge
      e.   Bass hunters, etc. are seen on this river all the time.
3.   Sizes of flies,
      a.   Size 2-8 minnow patterns. I like bendbacks because of all the rocks that you can get caught up on
      b.   Colors:
               i.   Dark for low light conditions
ii.   White and bright colors for daylight
4.   Anything else I should know?
      a.   Waders are a must during November through April, the water is extremely cold.
      b.   Studded wading boots are a bonus
      c.   Camping at the TBARS is primitive, for me, but there are showers available. I could possibly rent a yurt, but I normally don’t.
      d.   Best fishing for white bass and stripers is when there is no sun. Once it comes up, the game is over.
      e.   The water is extremely clear, and fish can be spooky
      f.   My largest fish from this area was a 15 pound striper in March
      g.   Launch in the dark and get positioned about ½ mile upstream from the launch.  N 31.16788 W 93.55895 http://mapper.acme.com/
      h.   5-8 wt rods, floating line, or sinking if they move out of the shallows
       i.   If SRA starts generating, there is no way we can stay in the generation canal. http://srala-toledo.com/
       i.   We check the status of the generators the day before we travel.
       j.   This is my old stomping ground. I lived less than 6 miles from the dam while I was going to college.

Let's work on the drivers/riders list.

I've updated with what I have today, but I am sure there are people that still need a ride.  Or drivers that haven't signed up yet.

From Skip:

"Just got off the phone with Pat at Spencer's and reserved a site (in her words) big enough for a troop of Boy Scouts. It is right next to the pavillon (which we have access to) There is also electicity at the pavillon if we have need for it."

Let's go fishing.......

The trip information was lost/deleted.

The sign-up sheet survived, so we are OK there, but the basic trip information was completely deleted.

Reconstruction is still in progress.

San Marcos River Trip with- Kevin Hutchison

The San Marcos trip is on for August 8th and the river should be in great shape. The Memorial Day flood, as we all know, was epic and has changed the look of the river but Kevin has floated it a few times since then and all the major obstructions have been removed by either Mother Nature, the local paddling clubs or by Kevin himself and his trusty chain saw.

If you have ever thought about floating the San Marcos this is the trip you should sign up for. The flow is great and the level has never been better. Kevin is planning on floating the section between Spencer Canoe / Shady Grove Campground ((512) 357-6113 ) down to the town of Staples. This is a long run but with the flow being what it is he thinks it will be perfect. Plans are to meet at Spencer Canoe at 8:00 am and run our shuttle by 8:30. Kevin will arrange the shuttle. There will be a $5.00 per car parking fee for each vehicle. Based on getting started at 8:30-9:00 we should be off the water around 5:00 pm.

Each person that signs up for this trip will receive a brand spanking new leader, a dozen San Marcos flies (in a new fly box) and a special commemorative t-shirt, printed special for this event courtesy of Kevin. The fee for this unforgettable trip will be $20.00 per person. Kevin also has available three canoes and two, one man, sit on top, kayaks which he will generously rent at a deep discounted rate of $15.00 per boat. These boats will be available on a first come first serve basis but if they are all gone I have other sources.

So, all you need to do is sign up now on the Texas FlyFishers website, then e-mail me to let me know what size T-Shirt you wear and if you would like to rent one of Kevin’s boats, I'll take care of the rest.
http://www.spencercanoes.net/

Those signing up after July 31st will not be guaranteed flies nor a commemorative t-shirt.
