General Discussion / Re: rio or SA for sink tip
« on: July 02, 2015, 06:56:32 PM »
Another recommendation for teeny sink tips.  Used the ts450 last weekend offshore with a 10wt.  I use ts450 or 350 with 10 wits.

For a less expensive option us a shooting head.  Buy t15 in bulk & cut to size based on the rod wt.

Integrated lines/heads are easier ( although definitely not easy the 1st few times), but good ones are 4x the cost of a t15 shooting head.

Teeny also makes shorter head & markets it as freshwater sink tip.  They are even weights:  200,300, etc.  Shorter is better in some circumstances.

Outing Chat / Rockport report 6/14

High water everywhere with tides about 2 ft or 1 above predicted.  This made my normal venues too deep to sight fish.  Water clarity was marginal (for Rockport in June), but definitely fishable.
Fished the Corner, Lidia Ann shore, the Pass, Estes Flats & Naked Man.
Was hungry for fish, so trout, red & flounder caught were all short of eating size.

Great day on the water and nothing broke.
Went out for 40 minutes on Sunday and got chased off by rain.

Great looking boat.
Use the build time to get all the accessories.

Remember a new boat does best with new fly rods & reels.

We used to do pt Mansfield around easter(not on Easter).  Water clear in most wind & it will be windy in mar or April.  Rent a house for a reasonable rate with or without a night fishing dock.
Cookiouts mandatory cause restraints suck.
I ran it 2 or 3 times & all times had to tell people to leave boats at home.  We had too many boats! And didn't want boater owners fishing alone.
Easy to find productive spots for 1st timers.

I'm staying on island sat night.
Suggestion to captains is to bring both a bow & stern anchor.

General Discussion / Re: When to use a full sinking fly line?
« on: April 24, 2014, 07:15:03 PM »
I use full sink almost exclusively offshore.  I use many different grain weights 350 to 1000 grn with 10 thru 14 wt rods.  Both integrated heads & shooting heads.

Both allow casting distance to increase versus wf lines, but require practice.  The casting stroke & feel are very different.

Integrated heads are expensive compared to shooting heads.  I mainly use teeny ts lines although I just got a rio striper 350 gr.  I have both Orvis & rio heads.  A good place to get either for cheep is our auction.

I have used full sink lines for tarpon at the secret tarpon spot in poc.  4-7 ft deep.  No tarpon jumped.

Secret spot = bill day reef

Pull them up top or at least shallower.
Use chum and anchor upcurrent.  Then you can fish for them in the upper 5 ft. of the water column with typical techniqes and equipment.

You can go as sophisticated as you want on chum.  Or use the potlicker approach and use canned dog food.  Gulp makes a chum that works and comes in a resealable plastic tub for ~$25.  It works.
