Yes, a clouser with lead eyes on a sink tip line should work.  A fly line with interchangeable tips might be the most economical approach.  Rio makes a versitip line.  I have the 8 wht. but you could add a sink tip to a 10 wht line to get a weighted fly down there.

Outing Chat / Fishing lodge in Punta Gorda, Belize
« on: June 09, 2013, 08:39:54 AM »
Anyone interested in fishing in Punta Gorda may want to check out Garbutt's Marina. Here is the Yellow dog Fly fishing description of it: http://www.yellowdogflyfishing.com/fly-fishing-vacation-lodges/fly-fishing-belize-garbutts-fishing-lodge.htm.

I met three of the brothers on my trip there, and they are solid individuals. Three of the brothers are very knowledgeable fishing guides. The oldest, Dennis, is a dive master and scuba diving instructor. The Lodge's location can't be beat.

Ifly has a trade up program where they give a store credit for your old equipment.  I've used it and think its pretty nice.

Tying Chat / weighting EP flies
« on: March 29, 2013, 07:13:09 PM »
I'm tying some EP fiber bait fish patterns.  Even when sparsely tied on 2/0 hooks, they barely sink.  I fished one on a sink tip line in Belize easily enough, but on a floating line?

Any suggestions on the best way to weight these flies?  Lead wire, bead or cone heads? Mid-shank or behind the eye?  I'd like a fairly slow but dependable sink rate.

thanks,

jerry

General Discussion / Would be fly Fisher
« on: February 05, 2013, 06:56:46 AM »
I met a chap from Wales on Sunday, who comes to the United States every quarter for two weeks. He very much wants to get into fly fishing, and asked me to recommend a good introductory book to fly fishing generally. I know Dave Hughes has written a book on basic fly fishing (which I have not read), but I am looking for additional recommendations from members that I can pass on to him.

Over in the UK, he will probably be fishing for trout on rivers, using a one-handed rod (not a spey rod). But he is looking for a general introductory book, not one limited just to trout fishing.

Any suggestions would be welcome.
