General Discussion / Friday West Matagorda with Steve Robinson/guide
« on: January 09, 2016, 08:52:21 AM »
Fished Friday, Jan 6th with guide Steve Robinson on his Hells Bay Professional with 60 hp Yamaha tiller. He called it a half day trip as we put in at Matagorda Harbor at 9 am and ran for about an hour to past Greens Bayou area. We had low winds, the bay was flat, water was clear just heavy overcast. I caught two reds on Dupree spoon fly of his. We found a lot of reds in one back lake and I had a lot of shots but I was leading too far most of the time. We saw some bull reds. One we saw in gin clear water that may have been in the 40 inch class. I put the spoon fly in front of the fish and it just turned and leisurely cruised off. We could see it  swimming around just out of range for a few minutes then lost it.

I had a good time with Steve and would recommend him. Website below.

I am reading "New stream side Guide to naturals and their imitations" by Art Flick. I read about it from Midcurrent email. Thank you Joe Nicklo!  His writing style is entertaining and educational. Fishing dry flies on a pretty mountain stream is on my bucket list.

General Discussion / Shoalwater

John C. and I hit Shoalwater Saturday. Launched at Charlie's Bait Camp with our Solo Skiffs. We had a very high tide with low winds out of the East and may have gotten up to 10 mph by noon. Water was gin clear in many places. We both caught one red but saw many more. The problem was the fish could see us as soon as we saw them. John has his skiff set up really well and I got some good tips from him and had a great time fishing with him. Our propellers on the 3.5 Tohatsu's started cavitating (slipping)  badly going back in. I was going at about half throttle or less. I had a new aluminum prop and got one trip out of it.

We started out poling but later just started drifting with the rod ready.

I got a Simrad Nss7. Simrad is owned by Lowrance.  I liked the Lowrance line because you could use other vendors mapping SD cards. Garmin had you restricted to their maps only. they may have changed. I think Simrad was originally Norwegian company. I got some Louisiana bay system micro SD cards from  . I got Calcasieu and Forchon area.
